Guest column/Skilled building trades strengthen future

Each holiday season, West Virginians are reminded that the true measure of our state’s strength is found in the ways we show up for one another. For members of the West Virginia Building and Construction Trades, this commitment to community is woven into our very being. Our members don’t just build the roads, bridges, schools and energy infrastructure that keep West Virginia moving. They show up after hours, off the clock and from the heart, especially during the holidays. For example, this year, one of our partnerships supports the Salvation Army, where we were able to bring ...

Roosevelt’s words remain powerful

The words President Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered to a joint session of Congress on Dec. 8, 1941, remain as powerful and meaningful today as they were when they were first spoken some 84 years ago. Americans were stunned and still reeling from the news that Japanese forces had attacked our Pearl Harbor naval base at Oahu, in the then-Territory of Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941, when Roosevelt spoke for a little more than seven minutes, including breaks for applause, the following day: “Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America ...

There are many holiday events

Our region will continue to celebrate the magic of the Christmas season during the next couple of weekends. From Cadiz to Chester, and many locations in between, you will be able to find a wide variety of things to see, hear and do. The parade will feature marching bands and cheerleaders, dancing groups, homecoming queens, colorful floats sponsored by community organizations and local businesses and, ...

Norfolk Southern must be accountable

Despite Norfolk Southern’s assertions that it would make things right in East Palestine — after a derailment in February 2023 — the company appears to continue to resist doing so. Most recently, it filed motions in federal court seeking to exclude expert testimony presented by the state of Ohio and the United States as part of ongoing litigation. The proposed $315 million federal settlement between Norfolk Southern and the U.S. Department of Justice remains pending. Among the challenged witnesses are three medical doctors who support Ohio’s effort for a long-term medical ...

Act would stop baby brokers

Lawmakers do love an alphabet soup when it comes to naming their legislation. But for some, if the clever name helps it stick in the minds of those who will be voting for it, the wordplay is worth the effort. Such is the case with the Adoption Deserves Oversight, Protection and Transparency Act (and its accompanying Hospital Adoption Education Act) being introduced by U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio. According to Husted’s office, the aim of the bill, which is co-led by U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Katie Britt, R-Ala., is to fight exploitation by unlicensed adoption ...

An opportunity to share with others

You’ve made it through Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Artists Sunday and Cyber Monday. It’s a long series of days on which businesses — big and small — and even some individuals are hoping you’ll be spending some (or all) of your holiday shopping budget with them. Now we have reached Giving Tuesday, a day organizers say “unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world.” Sure, there’s a financial component to this, too. Those who have the resources should, indeed, take advantage of today to give what they are able to nonprofits that support the ...
