To the editor: Written in Amendment 1 of the Bill of Rights “Congress shall make no law … abridging the right of the people peaceably to assemble”. This is interpreted to mean that people can peacefully protest. I have peacefully protested abortion. I stood along Main Street in Wintersville holding a sign against abortion. I did not obstruct the sidewalk or the road. Some passing cars acknowledged my presence—some in favor and some not in favor. I smiled and waved at everyone. Let me share a little personal immigration history with you. From 1960 to 1962, I believe, I was the only foreign student at Steubenville High School. In June of 1962, at 19, I was drafted into the Austrian military, but my mother in Austria, was able to push out my induction date until after my graduation from Big Red. To the editor: I’m writing to thank Julie Stenger of the Herald-Star for her column (“If you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them,”) and also Carol Teaff for her letter to the editor in the Feb. 8 edition (“Animal cruelty on display.”) Both told readers about the recent animal cruelty incident.
