Just more of the same

To the editor: Gas is $3.48, inflation is still 8 percent, there are higher taxes and more government spending, criminals are the good guys and drag queens are in every school library — thanks, Joe. Biden’s State of the Union speech was more of the same—God help us. The best quote of speech: “Trunalimunumaprzure.” He should release his annual physical results. Forty-percent of his presidency is spent in Delaware— receiving medication and recuperating? To eliminate shortfalls in Social Security, Medicare should stop giving illegal aliens billions. Illegals live in ...

Wreaths Across America is special

To the editor: For the second year in a row, I had the privilege to attend the Wreaths Across America ceremony held at Harding Stadium on Dec. 17. What a beautiful, heart-wrenching ceremony. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the volunteers, including myself, and led by Wendy Barr, go to the cemeteries and lay wreaths on the graves of our soldiers. As I did the year before last, I laid a wreath on the grave of my father, Staff Sgt. Darrell Gaylord. I placed the wreath with such pride and love. Last year was even more special, because my son, Anthony, was with me, and we were ...

Where has the money gone?

To the editor: Archbishop Dennis Schnurr of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is facilitating an audit of the finances of the Diocese of Steubenville with the assistance of chief financial officers from the dioceses of Cincinnati, Columbus and Youngstown. With that in mind, it is important to revisit a financial issue of major concern regarding the cathedral renovation project that was canceled in May 2022 by Bishop Jeffrey Monforton. The audit firm Schneider Downs conducted a separate audit of the cathedral funds in 2018. In a Sept. 24, 2020, WTOV-TV interview referencing the audit, ...

Questionable ways to spend money

To the editor: I’m an Indian Creek Local School District resident, homeowner and taxpayer. I just received my tax bill. I understand a re-evaluation of Jefferson County. My school tax amount is five and six times the amount of county, township, municipal and special taxes I pay. On the pie chart enclosed with the bill, it appears that 60 percent of all taxes goes to school funding — 60 percent. Do the people in this district and all of the districts in Ohio know that a coalition representing dozens of school districts (Indian Creek and the Jefferson County Joint Vocational ...

Progressive left dominates media

To the editor: “... I have observed (that) every single time liberals try to mock conservatives, they beclown themselves.” — (Facebook user) Robert R. Murphy Very true. This has been a truism at least since the Bunker/Meathead debates of the 1970s. Nearly every time liberal writers purposely try to portray a “stodgy, Stone Age conservative” character as comic relief, as an idiotic, clownish buffoon never to be taken seriously, they end up creating a popular, iconic, resonant character. Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Conner, “All in the Family”), Denny Crane (William ...

Feeling pain of Biden administration

To the editor: What is the state of our country after two years of “rule” by the Democrat party? I did not watch the State of the Union address because I did not want to hear Biden blaming all our problems on the MAGA Republicans. I have heard snippets on the news. Let’s look at the real state of the union. The southern border remains in crisis. The Mexican cartels are not only sending migrants and fentanyl over our border, but they are encroaching on our border. The migrants claim that they have come here to work and have a better life, but they complain about the ...
