Waiting on audit results

To the editor: Bishop Jeffrey Monforton of the Diocese of Steubenville in Feb. 23 edition of the diocesan newspaper, The Steubenville Register, announced the commencing of a financial health audit of the diocese. The audit was being facilitated by Archbishop Daniel Schnurr of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. In addition, diocesan financial officers from Youngstown, Columbus and Cincinnati were coordinating with the audit firm. In the February article Monforton said, “a timeline has not yet been established for potential results from the audit.” It has been more than three months ...

High standard is needed

To the editor: In 1992, a term limit Amendment passed overwhelmingly by 68 percent. This amendment was a change to the relationship between the government and the citizens. However, the amendment led to the ouster of legends in Ohio politics such as Bill Batchelder and ushered in the bribery scandal of people like Larry Householder. The term limit amendment also gave lobbyists more power in Columbus. I’ve heard firsthand stories of lobbyists telling elected representatives: “We’ll just wait you out and get the next guy,” if the representative does not want to go along with the ...

Hiking Toronto forging trails

To the editor: Similar to Steubenville’s Friends of Beatty Park, Toronto has a volunteer group dedicated to building trails; educating people about nature, geology, history, and archeology; and giving city residents and visitors a place to recreate, cogitate and associate. The first trail is a 1.75 mile walk along a marked path that includes the upper and lower portions of our historic ...

Thoughts and prayers

To the editor: This letter is written on Wednesday. It’s my dog’s birthday, it’s nearly the Memorial Day weekend and it’s the one-year anniversary of the Uvalde, Texas, mass shooting. We’ve had a year overflowing with violent acts of domestic terrorism. We’ve not demanded that our lawmakers do their due diligence and protect us with relevant, timely laws. We’ve sent uncountable numbers of thoughts and prayers. That’s the real kicker, out of all the phrases and fallacies, thoughts and prayers. You would think that people have caught on that thoughts and prayers ...

Come support Relay for Life

To the editor: On June 3, the Brooke-Hancock American Cancer Society Relay for Life will take place at Wellsburg’s Central Park (18th and Charles Streets) beginning at 6 p.m. This wonderful and helpful fundraising event is chaired by Tammy Hornick and Della Serevicz. You can meet these ladies at the relay selling luminarias. You can purchase one to honor your loved ones. These luminaria will line the walk and will shine on for the hope and cure for cancer. Relay for Life needs you, the community, to come out and support the walk. Perhaps you can walk with survivors to ...

Plenty of blame to go around

To the editor: Within the next month, the Sammis Plant in Stratton will close, which employs approximately 350 workers. It has also been reported recently the Cleveland-Cliffs tin mill in Weirton plans on releasing 300 workers. The reason for the releasing of workers — illegal dumping — of tin imports, dumping that’s coming from Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Kingdom If you are a former steelworker, you may remember illegal dumping during the Clinton administration — the U.S. steel industry was ruined and left in ...
