Indian Creek seeking substitute workers

WINTERSVILLE — Like many districts, Indian Creek Local Schools has dealt with a shortage of substitute employees and is taking some action to procure prospects.

Assistant Superintendent John Belt said help is needed in a variety of positions and officials are seeking people to fill the jobs.

“We need subs in all categories: Teachers, parapros, custodians, cooks/cashiers and bus drivers,” Belt said. “Bus drivers are critical. All of the contracted positions are full, but we have no subs. We have three subs who help with extracurricular events and we don’t have any for driving routes.”

Substitute teachers earn $100 per day while the paraprofessionals and non-certified positions are minimum wage. However, bus drivers earn $17.41 per hour and would now receive a $1,000 signing bonus. Belt noted that the district has 14 routes and buses cover 1,300 miles per day to transport students, excluding extracurricular activities.

“We raised the wage for a sub driver and added the sign-on bonus,” he added. “We’re just trying to come up with innovative ways to attract interest.”

Potential drivers must be at least 21 years of age and pass a drug test and background check, while the district will train them for a commercial driver’s license — if they do not already have one — as well as their bus endorsements. In addition, the driver must work for the district for a period of time before receiving the bonus.

Belt said anyone interested in applying can pick up an application at the central office, which is located at door No. 2 next to Kettlewell Memorial Stadium at 100 Park Drive in Wintersville, or call the office at (740) 264-3502.
