Man arrested following chase posts bond, returned to Ohio to face charges

NEW CUMBERAND — An Ohio man arrested in Chester following a two-state police chase two weeks ago didn’t show up for a scheduled court hearing in Hancock County, with officials later learning he had been released and returned to face other charges in Stark County.

Officials were somewhat perplexed about the absence of Van Keith Jones II, 41, originally scheduled for a hearing at 9 a.m. Thursday, after he wasn’t brought over to Hancock County Magistrate Court like others set to appear.

It took a little time to verify, but Jones, of Canton, had posted bond on all his West Virginia charges, resulting in his pickup by Massillon police.

While he was supposed to be in a New Cumberland courtroom, Jones instead was being arraigned by Massillon Municipal Court Magistrate Amanda Kuhn, who set his bond at $250,000 cash, surety or 10 percent with pretrial release and ordered no contact with the victim. His attorney Spencer Geraghty demanded a jury trial and filed the time waiver.

Jones was arrested driving an allegedly stolen vehicle while being sought on charges of robbery, intimidation of a witness, strangulation, violation of a protective order, theft, and domestic violence.

His West Virginia charges include bringing stolen property into the state, fleeing from police and driving while license suspended.

In addition, he faces 28 counts of violating a protective order in Marshall County for allegedly calling his victim while incarcerated in the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail. A hearing on those charges has been set for Thursday.

A spokesman for the Stark County Jail verified Jones was still incarcerated as of noon Thursday.

In regards to the charges stemming from the police pursuit, which concluded in Chester, another hearing has been set at 10 a.m. Oct. 2 before Magistrate Steve Svokas in Hancock County magistrate’s court via video technology.
