Lewis takes helm as Indian Creek treasurer

Adam Lewis

WINTERSVILLE — Adam Lewis has officially begun as the new treasurer for the Indian Creek Local School District and said he is becoming acclimated to his new role.

Lewis, who served as assistant treasurer since September, worked with Denise Todoroff during the transition as she wound down her 23-year career and retired on Dec. 31. The Mingo Junction resident took the reins on Jan. 1 and is serving on a one-year contract, and he is looking forward to the future.

“I’m happy to say that I’ve settled in quite well. It’s been a welcoming and supportive environment here at Indian Creek. The staff and administration have made it a smooth transition, and I’ve been able to get up to speed on the financial operations of the district,” he said. “Every day brings new opportunities to learn, and I’m enjoying getting to know the students, staff, and community better.”

He said Todoroff was exceptionally helpful throughout the transition process to make the change occur more smoothly.

“She took the time to walk me through the systems, processes and key aspects of the district’s finances and her vast knowledge. Her support has been invaluable, and it’s clear that she cares deeply about the success of the district and the people within it. I am eternally grateful for her sincere help and support.”

The Steubenville native is a 2010 graduate of Steubenville High School and went on to Eastern Gateway Community College and West Liberty University, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2015. He was employed by the Ohio Mid-Eastern Regional Education Service Agency, which helped familiarize him with area schools, and served with the Buckeye Online School for Success prior to heading to Creek. As treasurer, his role primarily involves managing the district’s finances, which includes overseeing the budget and ensuring the district remains financially sound to support its estimated 1,900 students and 300 employees. Other responsibilities entail processing payroll and handling an array of financial matters from investments to tax filings. He also works closely with the school board to keep them apprised of its financial status to help make decisions which align with the district’s goals. Lewis said it was a very dynamic and detail-oriented role and he enjoyed the challenge.

“Managing finances for a district of this size is certainly a big responsibility, but it’s also very rewarding to know that the work I do supports the education and well-being of so many individuals in our community,” he continued. “One of my key goals is to continue to strengthen our financial management processes so we can allocate resources in the most effective way possible to benefit our students and staff. Additionally, I’d love to explore more ways to increase transparency in our financial practices so the community feels well-informed and confident in how we manage funds. I’m also looking forward to working on long-term financial planning that supports the district’s growth and future needs.”

He noted that his previous experience has given him a solid foundation in financial management, budgeting and working with diverse teams, and he has also noticed similarities and differences between his past and current positions.

“While each role has its own unique aspects, the skills I’ve gained over the years, such as attention to detail, problem-solving, and communication, have all been valuable in my transition to this position,” he said. “In some ways, it’s similar, especially when it comes to managing finances, budgeting, and ensuring compliance with state regulations. However, working at a charter school and a state ITC provided me with a unique perspective on how different types of school organizations operate. Working at an ITC, I supported many different school districts, which gave me valuable experience in understanding the diverse needs and challenges that various districts face. Now, at Indian Creek, I’m excited to apply that knowledge in a more focused role, working directly with the district’s specific goals and needs.”

Lewis said he enjoys being a part of the district, adding that it has a strong sense of community and everyone was dedicated to making sure students have the best opportunities possible to succeed.

“It’s been a pleasure working alongside such passionate and hardworking people, and I’m excited about the direction the district is heading. One of the highlights for me has been the opportunity to meet so many dedicated educators and staff members who are truly invested in our students’ success. Also, working with the board of education and contributing to the planning of future financial strategies has been both a rewarding and educational experience. I look forward to many more highlights in the future!”

But mostly, he was thankful to be part of Indian Creek.

“I’d just like to say how grateful I am for the support I’ve received from everyone here at Indian Creek. It’s truly a team effort, and I’m honored to be part of this amazing district. I’m excited to continue working together to ensure that we provide the best possible education and opportunities for our students.”

Superintendent T.C. Chappelear welcomed Lewis into the fold and said he would be a tremendous asset to the district.

“Indian Creek feels fortunate to have hired Adam Lewis for the treasurer’s position. He comes to us with some great experience that will benefit our district. He hit the ground running on Jan. 1 and I have enjoyed working with Adam and look forward to his future at Indian Creek,” Chappelear said.
