Trio arrested in Steubenville Wal-Mart thefts

STEUBENVILLE — Two New Cumberland residents and a Steubenville man have been charged in connection with a string of thefts involving items in excess of $1,000 from Wal-Mart.

Arrested Monday were:

– Kevin Truax, 43, 1893 Frankfort Road, New Cumberland, felony theft, tampering with evidence, falsification and possession of drugs. He also was cited for driving under suspension.

– Megan Truax, 35, also of 1893 Frankfort Road, New Cumberland, theft. She also was cited for wrongful entrustment and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate her vehicle.

– Joseph Bennington, 40, 525 S. Fifth St., Steubenvlle, theft.

Police said the three were spotted in a vehicle matching the description and with the same license plate number as one that had been used in multiple thefts from Wal-Mart.

When the vehicle was pulled over, Truax allegedly gave officers a fictitious name and claimed he didn’t have his license with him. Police said when Megan Truax pulled a wallet out of the glove box, Kevin Truax pushed it back in and closed it.

Police said Kevin Truax allegedly was observed trying to conceal a grey powder-like substance, which later tested presumptive positive as heroin base, in the back of a cruiser, pointing out the vehicle had been checked for contraband several times during that shift.

Store personnel are securing video footage of additional thefts the trio is believed to have been involved in, police said.
