EGGC to held fresh Check Day
STEUBENVILLE — Eastern Gateway Community College will host a special program on suicide awareness Tuesday at the Youngstown Campus and Wednesday at the Steubenville Campus.
Fresh Check Day is a program of the Jordan Porco Foundation aimed at “Checking in with college students.” The program is described as an uplifting awareness raising event with music, free food, prizes and giveaways, and interactive booths that strive to break down the mental health stigma, and to connect students to resources and to each other.
Proceeds from the drawings will be donated to the Josh Merriman Foundation in Steubenville and the Help Network in Youngstown.
“This program is growing on campuses nationwide to educate and empower students. It also gives EGCC a chance to show our students they are cared about and appreciated, said Lisa Ward, director of career development at the school.
This is the first time EGCC has hosted this event
The mission of the froundation is to prevent suicide, promote mental health and create a message of hope for young adults. It was founded in 2011 after Jordan Porco died by suicide while a freshman in college
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students for Americans aged 10-24, and 18-24 is the average age of onset of many mental health disorders. About 1,100 students die by suicide each year on college campuses in the U.S., and two-thirds of students who need help don’t receive it, officials said.
