National pet contest to save lives

Move over, Hollywood … there is a new red carpet in town. Only this one might just require a few extra lint rollers.

We have all seen the glitz and glamour of the People’s Choice Awards. So now, isn’t it finally time for those four-legged companions we consider family members to have their moment in the sun?

That is why this year is the first of what officials hope will be many, Pet Lovers’ Choice Awards.

This isn’t just a simple internet contest; however.

It is a true, nationally-televised event which promises to be a celebration of those dogs and cats who make our houses feel like homes.

From emotional stories of survival to the hilarious antics of pampered puppies, this star-studded affair will be hosted by comedian and actor Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias.

Iglesias will bring his humor to an evening dedicated entirely to our furry best friends.

What makes this even more meaningful is that every time a supporter casts a paid vote, they are contributing directly to the life-saving work of the Best Friends Animal Society.

Since 1984, the organization has been a beacon of hope for shelter animals, working tirelessly from their sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, toward the goal of making the entire country no-kill, ensuring that every dog and cat has a chance to find a loving family.

For those in our community who believe their pet has that “wow” factor, the doors are now open to join in the fun.

Entering your pet is free and simple, but you will want to choose your path carefully based on your pet’s social media status.

If your furry friend is already a bit of a celebrity and has more than 10,000 followers, you will head to the influ

encer categories.

Those who do not have a large following will be categorized in the Pet Owner categories.

Whether you have a “Remarkable Rescue,” a “Hero Pet,” or even a “Most Fashionable” feline, there is a category to fit every personality, including titles for the “Ugliest Pet,” the “Senior Sweetheart” and the “Best Vocalist.”

If you’re worried about being late to the party, don’t be. Submissions are open until Feb. 15. To keep things fair, new entries are being placed into fresh groups that begin at zero votes. This means you will not have to play catch-up against those pets who were entered into the contest months ago. Entrants only compete against those who join at the same time, giving everyone an equal shot at the limelight, according to organizers.

The stakes are high. The prizes, nothing short of life-changing. Each winner will receive a package valued at more than $50,000. Imagine walking away with a $10,000 cash prize, a trophy and a chance to see your pet’s face on a billboard in New York City’s Times Square. Winners and their owners will be flown to Los Angeles for the awards show April 8, with travel and accommodations provided. The pet and their owner will take part in a nationally broadcast Red Carpet Show and a professional photography session. Even if a winner is unable to make the trip to California, organizers said they will coordinate a virtual hookup so no one misses out on their big moment.

The voting process is already underway, with the first round concluding Feb. 22. Final rounds run through March 26. Voters can cast one free vote daily for their favorite entry or purchase additional votes to help move a pet forward, while supporting the Best Friends Animal Society’s cause.

It is a beautiful reminder that when fame meets fur and love takes center stage, we can all work together to “Save Them All.”
