WHEELING — The Sycamore Folk Dancers delighted audiences Oct. 3-5 with a series of spirited performances during the annual Oglebayfest Oktoberfest Celebration at the Hess Shelter in Oglebay Park.

The troupe of 50 young dancers, ranging in age from elementary through high school, performed traditional German folk dances in authentic costumes, bringing joy and cultural flair to the festival.

The group performed multiple times during the celebration, beginning Oct. 3 at First Fridays on Fourth in downtown Steubenville. They entertained festivalgoers in front of the main stage, while their Wheeling performances continued Oct. 4-5.

Shows were held at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., followed encore performances on Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., with each drawing applause from crowds.

The Sycamore Folk Dancers are led by directors Zac Gordon and Jariel Henthorn and meet weekly at the Sycamore Youth Center.

Under their guidance, students have learned a wide repertoire of traditional dances from various cultures, with this weekend’s focus on festive German choreography.

Dressed in lederhosen and dirndls, the dancers showcased precision, teamwork and enthusiasm that reflected their months of preparation and love for sharing cultural traditions.

“The kids worked so hard to prepare for these shows, and their energy and enthusiasm really touched the audience,” stated Sycamore Executive Director Bobbyjon Bauman. “Seeing them perform with such joy and pride in front of hundreds of people throughout the weekend was a blessing.”

Based in Steubenville, the Sycamore Folk Dancers are part of the youth center’s performing arts program, which provides free classes and opportunities for young people to explore music, dance and culture.

The group regularly performs at community festivals, parades and cultural events across the Ohio Valley.
