Local businesses support Toronto seniors

TORONTO — The Toronto Senior Citizens group held its monthly meeting and annual fundraising program Aug. 21 at the Karaffa Recreation Center. This years’ theme was “Chinese.” Table decorations and costumes coincided with the theme, organizers noted. Chaplain Arlene Obertance-Rice gave the blessing, after which members enjoyed a catered dinner of sweet and sour chicken, white rice, green beans and egg rolls. Dessert included strawberry and blueberry cheesecake.

Obertance-Rice gave a reading of historical events that have happened in August, after which she led in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

President John Livingstone called on officers for their respective reports.

Due to illness, the secretary’s report was waived. Treasurer Patty Smith gave the financial report. Social Secretary Peggy Ziarko thanked the kitchen committee and noted birthdays and wedding anniversaries in August. Ziarko announced those members who were sick or in hospital.

Following the meeting, the 50/50 drawing took place, with Marlene Dunn winning $123. Jean Cline won the basket drawing and 10 winners rerceived door prizes. Four members won rounds of bingo.

There were 22 items donated to the Chinese auction, with the top prize of $600 in labor service being won by Pat Richardson. The gift was donated by PRC Construction.

Richardson is organizing her “honey-do” list for PRC. The group gratefully acknowledged the following businesses and individuals for their continued support: PRC Construction, Valley Converting Co., Mayor John Parker, Cedar One Realty, Go-Go Pest Control, Smith Oil, Gem City Pizza, Iggy’s Pizza, Baby-Boyz BBQ and Yummy’ Ice Cream.

By the end of the evening, there were 38 winners of cash, gift cards, scratch tickets, craft items, gift baskets and other prizes, raising more than $500 for program supplies.

The next meeting will be held Sept. 18 at the Karaffa Recreation Center.
