COLUMBUS — It was a week’s worth of memories. Memories which will last a lifetime. Four generations came together to celebrate the 100th birthday of lifelong resident Eleanor Weiss.
To celebrate this special milestone, Weiss, who now resides in Columbus, was thrown four separate parties by her children, David and Jill Weiss of Columbus, Bill Weiss of Columbus, Doug and Claire Weiss of Pittsburgh and Susan Weiss Mulgrew of Naples, Fla.
The celebrations, parties and fun began July 20 and concluded six days later. The first celebration was held at one of Weiss’s favorite restaurants in Columbus, Hyde Park. There were 22 family members in attendance, spanning four generations.
Grandchildren traveled from as far away as Los Angeles to help honor the woman who is well-known throughout the Steubenville community.
The second party was held the following day, with an indoor/outdoor event complete with games and balloons. The event also celebrated the second birthday of her first great-grandchild, Logan. Grandmother Lora Weiss of Steubenville attended, as well.
Two days later, the adult children and their spouses gathered at another of Weiss’s restaurants, Lindey’s in German Village.
Later in the week, the final celebration was held at Our Home, an assisted living facility where Weiss resides. Staff members exceeded expectations, decorating and recognizing the milestone by surprising their resident with a singer who played all of the favorite songs from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. Everyone in attendance sang along, including Weiss — who never missed a word.
She was previously a 60-year choir member at the First Westminster Church. Throughout July, Weiss’s mailbox brightened her day, daily.
The congregation of First Westminster Church had sent cards and messages congratulating her on her birthday. She had served as a deacon, session member and clerk of session during the merger of the church.
Additional birthday wishes arrived from the Steubenville Junior and Senior women’s clubs. Club members remembered Weiss’s service as local and state president.
Weiss is well-known from her days working at Ohio Valley and St. John’s hospitals, where she volunteered hundreds of hours as a gift shop worker and president of the auxiliary.
She and her family are very grateful to all of her Steubenville friends who too the time to remember her by sending “flowers, cards and other remembrances to make this milestone birthday so memorable.”
