Urban Mission sets open house

STEUBENVILLE — Urban Mission Ministries invites all community members to a public open house from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 15.

This event offers an opportunity for residents to tour the food pantry facility, learn about its ministries and meet the team working to support neighbors throughout the region.

Visitors will be able to explore the mission’s programs and discover ways to get involved through volunteering, giving or community partnership.

Guests are asked to park at the Seventh Street Plaza and walk across the street to the Mission’s location at 311 N. Sixth St. Entry is through the double glass doors facing Sixth Street.

“We are excited to welcome our neighbors into our space and show the work that is being done each day to support our community,” said the Rev. Kimberly Arbaugh, the mission’s executive director.

Holtz scholarship deadline nears

EAST LIVERPOOL — Applications are still being accepted for the Lou Holtz Life Improvement Scholarship.

This is a tuition award of up to $3,750 payable directly to a one-to-two-year trade school and is open to students who attend schools in the Upper Ohio Valley.

Applications are available from school guidance counselors or by contacting the Upper Ohio Valley Museum and Learning Center at the Lou Holtz Hall of Fame at (330) 386-5443. The deadline for applying is April 6.

Digging into cover crops workshop

JEWETT — Farmers, landowners, and anyone interested in improving soil health and crop resilience are invited to attend Digging into Cover Crops, a hands-on field workshop from 9:30 a.m. to noon on April 18. The exact location of the program will be announced closer to the event on the harrison.osu.edu website calendar.)

Hosted by the Harrison Soil and Water Conservation District and Ohio State University Extension, this interactive workshop will provide practical, field-based education on how cover crops can improve soil function, manage weeds and pests, and support long-term farm productivity.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore root boxes that highlight deep, diverse cover crop root systems; learn how to select the right cover crop species using soil maps and decision-making tools; hear what’s working and what’s not when it comes to weed suppression and pest control; learn about cover crop research plots led by the Ohio Department of Agriculture; and find out how to rent and operate no-till drills through local soil and water conservation districts.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required by April 13. To RSVP, contact the Harrison Soil and Water Conservation District at 740-942-8837.

The first 20 registered attendees will receive a free copy of “Managing Cover Crops Profitably” (3rd Edition) and the Midwest Cover Crops Pocket Field Guide. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided. Dress for the weather, as this is an outdoor event.

Brilliant Lions plan events

BRILLIANT — Fifteen members were present when the Brilliant Lions Club held its March meeting.

The evening featured an Italian dinner hosted by J.J. Kamerer.

Butch Ford presided. Plans were made for a tag day, with details to be made available later. Lamont and Esther McCoy will be attending the upcoming Lions convention, it was announced. A blood drive has been planned for April 24 in the club’s headquarters.

Plans are being made for the barbecue chicken dinner. Curt Creamer will be in charge of the barbecue chicken take-out dinner, which will be held in April. More details and ticket information will be released later.

The next meeting will be held April 2.

Water line repair scheduled

WEIRTON — The Weirton Area Water Board has scheduled a water line repair on Capitol Drive, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday.

Service will be interrupted on Capitol Drive and the 4000 block of Palisades Drive as part of the project, with crews on site until repairs are completed.

Customers in the affected area are advised to refrain from doing laundry during the project, as a result of the possibility of discolored water. A boil order will be issued once water service is restored in the area.
