Brooke County Sheriff

Charged: Shawn P. Arndt, 36, and Devon J. Chappell, 20, both of Burgettstown, both for possession of a controlled substance and prohibited possession of a firearm, Saturday.

Missing person search: Deputies were looking for an elderly man with dementia in the Two Ridge Road and township Road 373 area of Steubenville between 8:25 p.m. and about 11 p.m. Friday. The man was found.

Suspicious activity: Two pedestrians and one bicyclist were seen going up and down Logan Avenue in Mingo Junction early Saturday. The area was checked and no one was found.

Breakdown: A man was seen walking along U.S. Route 22 near state Route 7 at about 5 a.m. Sunday. A deputy who approached him learned his vehicle had broken down in Weirton and he was walking home, so the deputy provided him a ride.

Found canine: A dog resembling a poodle and with no collar or tag was found near the Mingo Junction Dollar General store Sunday morning. A staff member gave the dog food and water, and the humane officer was called.

Unidentified object: A person who recently moved into a Steubenville home reported finding a stick of dynamite in the basement Sunday, but the responding deputy discovered it actually was a red flare.

Attempted breaking and entering: The department received a report of two people dressed in black and wearing ski masks attempting to break into a home Sunday night. Deputies found no one at the scene.

Assault: A woman reported a woman known to her struck her in the face and ear early Sunday.

Vehicle vandalism: A man reported the windshield of his vehicle was broken with a chunk of concrete while parked outside a business on Mall Drive early Saturday. Police are accessing security cameras in an effort to identify those responsible.

A strange find: A wheelchair that appeared new and in good condition was found in a wooded area near Franklin and Sherman avenues Saturday morning.

Theft: Police received a report Sunday of a garage on Sinclair Avenue being broken into and multiple tools being taken.

Car thefts: A purse was taken from a vehicle in the 2700 block of Cleveland Avenue Saturday. The owner said the vehicle was locked and she believes a tool was used to gain access to it. A gym bag was reported taken from a vehicle in the 2200 block of Powell Avenue Saturday. Another vehicle was entered in the 2400 block of Alexander Manor East Saturday, and it appeared that only the driver’s insurance card was missing. A wallet was reported taken from an unlocked vehicle in the 2600 block of Alvarado Boulevard Sunday.

Mistaken identity: Police received a call about an unknown person knocking on the door of a residence early Monday morning, but the visitor proved to be someone the resident knew.
