Police reports
Steubenville Police
Two-fer: A city resident was taken into custody after he wandered up to police investigating another incident to find out “what was going on” and they realized he had an outstanding warrant, Wednesday. Lawrence Hicks, 35, 436 S. Fourth St., Steubenville, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of possession of drugs, tampering with evidence and obstruction as well as a failure to appear warrant out of Belmont County, police said. Police said they caught up to Hicks in the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue and advised him of his warrant, but when they tried to take him into custody he allegedly took off running “and threw an item onto a parked vehicle.” Police said they recovered a white rock-like substance believed to be cocaine from the exterior of the car. In the original incident, police reported seeing two men leaving an abandoned property in a high-drug area who appeared to pass an item off between them, then took off running when a cruiser pulled up. Police said they chased Yueseff AbuJoumaa, 36, no fixed address, through the 1500 block of Maryland Avenue, catching up to him when he circled back to the first building. AbuJoumaa said he “ran … because he was arrested before on a paraphernalia charge” and denied having had anything illegal in his possession in the alley way. AbuJoumma was charged with obstructing official business.
Low blow: A Brondus Avenue resident said someone is stealing his disability benefits, Wednesday. He said he gets the money on a Direct Express card, but in late April a new card was issued that he hadn’t asked for. He said he got that straightened out, but it happened again in June, and this time the person requested a change of address. He said on both occasions his monthly benefits were withdrawn after the new cards were issued.
Ulterior motives: A Soutth Fourth Street resident said an individual who offered to pick up her groceries for her used her bank card to make another $40 in purchases she hadn’t authorized, Wednesday. She said she noticed the theft when she checked her balance.
Big fall: Police were asked to assist Steubenville firefighters with a Lincoln Boulevard resident who had a laceration on her leg, Thursday. She told police she tripped over a clothes basket and fell onto a dinner plate that shattered when she hit it. She was taken to the hospital for further treatment.
Problem ex: A city resident said her niece’s ex-boyfriend broke into her apartment on Earl Drive, Wednesday. Police determined the male had established residency and told the woman if they didn’t want the male there they needed to have him legally evicted. The woman’s niece told them her ex previously took the plates off her car and took a car that belonged to her.
Stolen: Two samurai swords were removed from a car parked in the 100 block of McDowell Avenue, Wednesday. The owners valued them at about $500. The thief broke a window to gain access to the items.
