Guest column/Steubenville’s place in America of Abraham Lincoln

On Market Street in Steubenville, history still looks back at you. The bronze figure of Edwin M. Stanton gazes across the valley he once called home. Born here in 1814, Stanton rose from the banks of the Ohio to the heart of Washington, where he became Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of war in 1862. His relentless drive and stern resolve kept the Union armies supplied and focused through the Civil War. When Lincoln died at Ford’s Theater, Stanton kept vigil and spoke words that still echo: “Now he belongs to the ages.” That voice, that iron resolve, had its roots here. But Stanton ...

Natural gas helps keep Ohioans warm

To the editor: With the cold front coming in and temperatures dropping quickly across the state, Ohioans need reliable and affordable energy to stay warm. Our state’s essential natural gas provides the dependable power for furnaces and heat pumps. With over 63 percent of Ohio residents relying on it for home heating, natural gas is the most dependable energy source for keeping families safe and warm through the holidays. The state benefits from a reliable supply, thanks to production in the Shale Crescent region. The Shale Crescent region, encompassing Ohio, Pennsylvania and ...

Trumpism is on the line

To the editor: How is it that the current president of our great nation, Donald J. Trump, had elected to be AWOL during the recent federal government shutdown, which was the largest in our history, as he chose to decide to spend much of his time partying at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and playing golf, seemingly endlessly, while the people of our nation continued to be deprived of benefits to which they were entitled, while he personally exhibited a total lack of compassion for those who were suffering? Also, why did this man (Trump) continue to not get more personally ...

Safeguard freedoms, focus on treatment

Brooke County officials find themselves at a crossroads familiar to many communities across West Virginia — deciding how to spend money secured through settlements with opioid manufacturers and distributors. The intention behind those funds was clear: To help repair the devastation the opioid epidemic has wrought on our region and its families, its workforce and its way of life. Yet, as discussions late last month before the Brooke County Commission reveal, the temptation to divert those treatment and recovery dollars toward law enforcement remains strong. The Brooke County ...

Smokeout sends a clear message

Today is a good day to clear the air. It’s the annual Great American Smokeout — marked on the third Thursday in November — when smokers will make the commitment to stop smoking for the day. The goal is to convince smokers that if they can quit for 24 hours, they can quit for good. You don’t have to stop smoking in one day. Start with Day 1, literature from the American Cancer Society reminds. It’s a great first step to stopping a bad habit that can lead to dire consequences. Like with most efforts, there is good news and bad news to report. According to the American ...

Lincoln’s words remain powerful

The Civil War was far from over on Nov. 19, 1863, when the dedication ceremonies were held for the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg. Politicians and dignitaries had gathered in the small Pennsylvania town to remember the battle of July 1-3 of that year in which Union forces had defeated Confederate armies in what proved to be a major turning point in the war. The dedication came more than a month after the reburial of Union soldiers from their battlefield graves had started on Oct. 17. The featured presentation was supposed to be made by Edward Everett, a prominent ...
