Norfolk Southern must be accountable

Despite Norfolk Southern’s assertions that it would make things right in East Palestine — after a derailment in February 2023 — the company appears to continue to resist doing so. Most recently, it filed motions in federal court seeking to exclude expert testimony presented by the state of Ohio and the United States as part of ongoing litigation. The proposed $315 million federal settlement between Norfolk Southern and the U.S. Department of Justice remains pending. Among the challenged witnesses are three medical doctors who support Ohio’s effort for a long-term medical ...

Act would stop baby brokers

Lawmakers do love an alphabet soup when it comes to naming their legislation. But for some, if the clever name helps it stick in the minds of those who will be voting for it, the wordplay is worth the effort. Such is the case with the Adoption Deserves Oversight, Protection and Transparency Act (and its accompanying Hospital Adoption Education Act) being introduced by U.S. Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio. According to Husted’s office, the aim of the bill, which is co-led by U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Katie Britt, R-Ala., is to fight exploitation by unlicensed adoption ...

An opportunity to share with others

You’ve made it through Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Artists Sunday and Cyber Monday. It’s a long series of days on which businesses — big and small — and even some individuals are hoping you’ll be spending some (or all) of your holiday shopping budget with them. Now we have reached Giving Tuesday, a day organizers say “unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world.” Sure, there’s a financial component to this, too. Credit card debt is rising faster in Ohio than in all but four other states. The Buckeye State had the fifth-highest unemployment rate in the country in August (the Capital Journal notes “despite years of spending billions on ...

Guest column/Coal industry still powers nation, worth defending

For more than a century, America’s coal industry has powered our homes, forged our steel and fueled our prosperity. It has been the backbone of industrial growth and a symbol of American strength, self-reliance and hard work. Even today — after nearly two decades of relentless political and regulatory assault — coal remains one of this nation’s most valuable resources, sustaining hundreds of thousands of jobs and keeping electricity affordable and reliable for millions of families. Coal mining and the industries that depend directly on it employ more than 400,000 Americans. ...

Health care, helping homeless

To the editor: Unlike many Democrats in Congress, I’ll admit when I’m wrong. A year ago I predicted the old Democrat party will dismantle in five years. Get a toe tag ready — it’ll probably be much sooner. The communists in this party believe it’s time for an all-out effort to turn America into Cuba. Hysterical Democrats say Trump is king and democracy is dead. Would a king allow them to demonstrate or allow them First Amendment rights? Do people who can’t tell the difference between a man and woman know the difference between king and president? Michelle Obama said ...
