We need to teach our children how to live

There is a quiet wisdom in the way a child watches the world. Their eyes are wide and not yet clouded by the cynicism of adulthood. Their hearts are constantly open, always believing in a way that most of us have forgotten how to do. Questions come tumbling out of their mouths like marbles spilled across a hardwood floor. But for some reason, we tend to take that precious innocence for granted. Instead, we spend so much of our time hurrying them toward the next milestone in life. We are continually preparing them for standardized tests, college applications, their future ...

Guest column/Re-thinking private property rights, projects

As of Feb. 12, the Trump administration revoked the 2009 Endangerment Finding that classified carbon dioxide, methane and four other greenhouse gases as a threat to public health and welfare. Trump and his EPA director Lee Zeldin declared climate change a “hoax.” If carbon dioxide is no longer a threat, why are we are spending billions of tax-payer dollars to capture emissions? As Ohio’s Republican lawmakers are moving forward to pass carbon capture and sequestration bills, HB 170 and SB 136, Republican lawmakers in other states are having second thoughts about CCS bills that ...

Hoagland right choice in primary

To the editor: Why will I vote for Frank Hoagland in the May 5 Republican primary for the 96th Ohio House? I didn’t expect to have the chance to help Hoagland get elected to the Ohio House with my vote in 2026, but it’s an opportunity I welcome because ...

Development money coming Ohio’s way

Good news came this week out of the U.S. Commerce Department, which says Japan is planning to fund three projects totaling approximately $36 billion in the coming years — one each in Ohio, Texas and Georgia. According to Reuters, this is the first wave of investments in the planned $550 billion reportedly pledged as part of a trade deal with the U.S. The Ohio project is expected to be a $33 billion natural gas-fired power plant in Portsmouth in the southern part of the state — perhaps the largest ever, according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Reuters reports Lutnick ...
