Red Riders play Tuesday

WEIRTON – The Weir High baseball team will play Ravenswood at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bowman Field in a Class AA regional semifinal.

Big Red ticket hours announced

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville High School athletic department has announced that the summer ticket office hours will be from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Thursday. It will be closed June 13-28.

All football season tickets must be picked up by Aug. 1. They are available for purchase now.

Football program ads must be submitted by July 8 (includes senior athletes ads).

Weirton man sentenced in federal court

WHEELING – Ryan Bobby Schnettler, 25, of Weirton was sentenced Wednesday to 87 months in prison for possession of child pornography, U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld II announced.

Schnettler was initially charged in Hancock County Magistrates Court in November after he allegedly processed more than 600 images and videos of child pornography.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Matthew S. Adams of the Crimes Against Children Unit began investigating Schnettler in September, when he received a notice from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The CyberTipline report said someone with a certain Internet Protocol address had uploaded a child pornography video to a free video hosting service.

Adams learned of Schnettler’s identity after serving an administrative subpoena on Comcast and requesting subscriber information. He then obtained a search warrant for Schnettler’s Elm Street residence, the complaint reads.

The officer viewed Schnettler’s laptop computer and seized a USB thumb drive, which allegedly contained more than 600 images and videos of child pornography, according to reports.

Veteran grave markers, flags available

FOLLANSBEE – Mullenbach Funeral Home has purchased 2,500 U.S. flags for the graves of veterans on Memorial Day and is offering assistance in obtaining military markers for those graves without them.

The flags will be available at the funeral home during a special program presented by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad at 2 p.m. May 27 at the funeral home at 669 Main St.

Bulk pickup concludes Saturday in city

STEUBENVILLE – The city’s bulk pickup will come to an end Saturday on all streets on LaBelle..

“This collection is for household items only. All items are to be placed at the curb Friday night where regular trash collection occurs each week. Once the schedule is completed there will be no return trips,” announced Sanitation Director Bob Baird.

“We will not pick up tires of any kind, any electronics such as computers or televisions, any item with freon gas including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning or dehumidiers. We will also not pick up hazardous wastes including petrochemicals, fuels, oils, solvents or paint. And we will not collect construction materials such as shingles, plaster, drywall, concrete, block or brick,” stated Baird.

Pittsburgh schools tap ex-NFL player

PITTSBURGH – Officials say a former professional football player has been tapped to be the next superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools.

City school directors voted Wednesday evening to offer a five-year contract to Anthony Hamlet.

Hamlet had been the director of accountability transformation in the School District of Palm Beach in Florida since June 2014. His resume states he oversaw 20 low-performing schools and managed budgets totaling more than $128 million.

Hamlet was a defensive end for the Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts in the early 1990s.

Legion to hold tryouts

TORONTO – Toronto Post 86 Legion Baseball will hold tryouts at 6 p.m. Friday at the Knight Complex. All outside players must have a release from their base school legion team to tryout.

Post 33 to hold camp

STEUBENVILLE – The Annual Post 33 Hitting Camp for baseball players ages 7-18 will be held at Vaccaro Field. First session is June 9,-11 and the second session is June 13-15, each of those days from 9 a.m. to noon.

Volleyball officials are wanted

The West Virginia-Ohio Volleyball Officials Association is sponsoring a 28-hour course in the fundamentals of volleyball officiating.

Candidates successfully completing the course of study will be eligible to officiate during the next school year. The course begins Tuesday.

Tennis camp to be held

WEIRTON – The annual morning tennis camp is set for June 6-10 at Starvaggi Park for all boys and girls in Grades 1-9.

The camp runs each day from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for grades 1-4 and from 10:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. for grades 5-9.

For grades 1-4, the cost is $35 per person. For grades 5-9, the cost is $50 per person.

Sandi Gajtka and Sue Wesie are again coordinating the five-morning camp that will include fundamental instruction and skill games/drills. Each camper will receive a T-shirt.

Each camper is required to have a tennis racquet, water bottle, and two cans of USTA approved tennis balls.

Sign-ups are being taken at the Millsop Community Center.

Edison tops Beaver

CALCUTTA – The Edison baseball team closed the regular season with a 7-5 win over Beaver Local Monday.

On the mound, Zac Kramarich earned the win with three strikeouts. Collin Scott came in for relief in the seventh inning and struck out one.

At the plate, Bryce Piatt had a single and an RBI; Larry Bielawski had three singles; Tanner Evans had a double; Joe Nave had a double and three RBIs; Dom Rogers had a single and an RBI; Anthony Sinicropi had an RBI and David Kinney had a triple.

Edison finished the regular season with a record of 14-9. The Wildcats face Tusky Valley in the Division III sectional opener today at Jefferson Lake State Park.

Smyth is MEC Pitcher of Week

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Liberty University mound ace Mark Smyth has been named Pitcher of the Week in the Mountain East Conference.

Smyth, an Edison High School graduate, was honored after picking up a win and a save over the weekend as the Hilltoppers took three of four games from Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit to earn a spot in this week’s MEC Tournament field.

The Hilltopper veteran got the Black and Gold off to a flying start on Saturday when he fired a six-hit shutout in the series opener. He scattered six singles while striking out three and walking one to pick up his MEC-best eighth win of the season.

With West Liberty needing a sweep in Sunday’s doubleheader to claim the MEC North Division’s third and final playoff spot, Smyth came up big again. After the Hilltoppers scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead in the first game, Smyth came out of the bullpen to blank the Cardinals in the bottom of the frame for his first save of the season.

Smyth leads all active NCAA Division II pitchers with 24 career complete games. His 23 career wins are a West Liberty school record.

Smyth and his Hilltopper teammates open MEC Tournament play in Beckley on Thursday against West Virginia State.

Lions Club sponsors scramble

RICHMOND – The Richmond Lions Club is sponsoring its third annual four man/woman golf scramble on June 4 at Spring Hills Golf Course.

Minimum team handicap is 40.

The cost is $60 per person, which includes 18 holes with cart, continental breakfast, snacks at the turn and steak dinner. Proceeds will go for site saving, scholarships and community projects.

Saline Township road work set

HAMMONDSVILLE – Saline Township Road 304E (Goose Run Road) will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Monday for culvert replacement, weather permitting, township officials announced this morning.

Wells Township sets cleanup

BRILLIANT – The Wells Township annual cleanup is slated from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 2-3.

The cleanup is for township residents only. Items can be dropped off at 213 Market St. at the slag yard next the American Legion post.

Items that will be accepted include household furniture, small household appliances, yard decorations/furniture, playground equipment, toys and bikes, as well as TVs, computers, monitors, tires with or without rims, small truck tires with or without rims, car batteries, mattresses and carpeting.

Items that will not be accepted include tires from businesses, semi-trailer truck tires, paint and hazardous household products, household garbage, construction and demolition materials, trees and grass cuttings.

WELLSBURG – The Wellsburg Chamber of Commerce board of directors will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Drover’s Inn.

The meeting was rescheduled from an earlier date. Anyone interested in joining the chamber is welcome.

Cleveland casino changing name

CLEVELAND – Cleveland’s downtown casino is closing down but for less than two days.

It’s all part of the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland’s transformation into Jack Cleveland Casino.

The name change comes after casino owner Rock Gaming took over operations from Caesar’s Entertainment.

The Dan Gilbert-owned company Rock Gaming also changed its name to Jack Entertainment LLC.

The shutdown at Cleveland’s casino will begin just after midnight on May 9 and continue until mid-afternoon on May 11.

The time will be used to transfer the internal gaming systems and finish renaming it Jack Cleveland Casino. Jack Entertainment also is rebranding Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati and ThistleDown Racino near Cleveland.
