CADIZ -- A man and a woman are dead as a result of a one-vehicle crash that occurred on Christmas Day.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Steubenville Post reported the crash occurred at about 11:27 p.m. in Green Township, Harrison County. Post Commander Lt. Joseph Fetty said in a news release that a 2011 BMW driven by Dale W. Resor, 34, of Freeport was traveling west on U.S. Route 22. The vehicle apparently veered off the right edge of the roadway in a curve to the left. The vehicle then struck a traffic sign and traveled along an embankment before it vaulted from the embankment and overturned onto a guardrail, striking a bridge support and coming to rest upright under the overpass.
Resor and his passenger, Meghan S. Higgenbotham, 33, of Sherrodsville, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The patrol said events leading up to the deaths remain under investigation.
"We're still working on it. We should have something by the first of next week," Fetty said.
Emergency medical and rescue personnel from the Scio, Hopedale and Cadiz fire departments, the Harrison County Coroner's Office and Harrison County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene.
Fetty added that traffic during the Christmas holiday otherwise had been largely without incident before the crash.
"It wasn't too bad, minimal stuff. That was probably the only major crash that we did have," he said.
Fetty repeated law enforcement's warning to motorists to drive cautiously during the busy holiday season. The highway patrol advises drivers to plan their routes, be aware of weather conditions and drive at reasonable speeds.
