STEUBENVILLE -- A final bid of $540,000 was listed as the online auction for the former Macy's store at the Fort Steuben Mall drew to a close Wednesday afternoon.
The auction had started at a $150,000 minimum bid.
The listing is now labeled as "in escrow" on the website of Ten-X, a national company that handles commercial real estate auctions.
The store sale still must go through escrow and final due diligence before the purchase proceeds.
The real estate companies involved said the identity of the company or individual will become known locally after the processes for the closing of the sale are completed.
The Macy's at the mall closed in 2017. The space had been an anchor tenant of the mall since it opened in 1974. The former Kaufmann's department store chain out of Pittsburgh built and owned that portion of the mall, which passed to Macy's ownership when Macy's acquired Kaufmann's.
City officials said the U-Haul company had contacted the city and was inquiring about the space and any zoning issues it might face. U-Haul has established a two-story, climate-controlled self-storage space and a retail store in the former Macy's space at the Beaver Valley Mall.
