STEUBENVILLE -- The pastor of First Westminster Presbyterian Church will be the featured speaker for the second-annual Friendship Room fundraiser dinner set for 6 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Hellenic Hall.

"I will be talking about the cost of discipleship," said the Rev. Jason Elliott.

"I am honored to have been asked to speak at the dinner because a number of members of our congregation volunteer at the Friendship Room and our church tries to provide help to the Friendship Room where people in need can find support," explained Elliott.

Steubenville native Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of the Galveston-Houston archdiocese spoke at the first fundraiser dinner in 2016.

"Our dinner is financed by local businesses who buy a table. We already have a number of people who have indicated they plan to attend the event, but the dinner is still open. Anyone who would like to join us can call the Friendship Room at (740) 314-5095. The dinner is free, but we always accept donations for the Friendship Room. The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the dinner starts at 7 p.m.," explained Friendship Room Coordinator Molly McGovern.

Bishop Jeffrey M. Monforton of the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville will pray and provide comments at the dinner.

"My message will be short and to the point. We are all members of the human family, and we need to come together to help each other. We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers. When we reach out to help others, we are reaching out to Jesus," stated Monforton.

"No accolades for us. We are simply providing an address for the dinner, and we look forward to welcoming the community to the Hellenic Hall," noted the Rev. Nick Halkias, pastor of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

The Friendship Room was organized several years ago and has been a place where people can obtain food, a place to rest and a shoulder to lean on in downtown Steubenville.
