West Elementary pupils help in leukemia fight

ADENA -- Pupils at West Elementary have collected more than $780 for the Central Ohio Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
"The kids set a goal of $1,500, but the real goal was $500," said Delores Spragg, the school nurse and fundraiser organizer. "We brought in $2,100 the year before (and) all of the money is kept in the area. Leukemia is one of my issues because my husband and a friend's teenage son died of leukemia. I also knew several children in the area who were diagnosed with some form of it."
About 332 students in pre-K through sixth grade were given boxes and asked to collect money. The upperclassmen helped, Spragg said.
"They took the boxes home and collected pennies, nickels and dimes and we had three $50 donations which helped bring us up," she said. "The sixth-graders collected the boxes and wrapped the coins, plus it gave them a bit of math skills."
Students were recognized for donating with a special display in the gym and classes battled it out to raise the most money and obtain a pizza party. That honor went to Jessica Brown's kindergarten class, which raised $182.60.
"This is the fourth year for the leukemia fundraiser and the third year for our cystic fibrosis benefit in April. We started out by having diabetic walks; that was the first fundraiser we had," Spragg said. "Kids need to understand that they should give and there are people who need help."
