WELLSBURG -- The Brooke football team struggled to slow down Elkins powerful running game and the offense could not keep up as the visiting Tigers took a 49-12 win at Brooke Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The Bruins fell behind 14-0 after one quarter on a pair of long scoring runs by the Tigers and trailed 21-0 at halftime.

Brooke’s defense got a stop to start the second half, but the visitors returned a punt for a score to go up 28-0 midway through the third.

Brooke finally got something going on the first snap of the next drive when Bruins quarterback Kamden Sperringer delivered a perfect pass to senior receiver Grant Yost in stride and he hauled it in and went 80-yards to put the Bruins on the board.

The Tigers, though, answered with a long scoring run on the next drive and got a pick-six on the drive after that to put things away.

The Bruins did add a late touchdown on their last drive, Memphis McCoy scoring on a short run to cap a nice scoring drive by Brooke’s reserve unit and conclude the scoring.

Elkins, which improved to 8-1 with the victory and solidified its spot in the Class AAA playoff race, closes its regular season next week against Preston.

The Bruins, now 4-5, will look to snap a four-game slide and finish the regular season at .500 when they host rival Weir High in the annual clash of neighboring schools on Paul “Bud” Billiard Field next Friday.

Starting at /week.
