WEIRTON – The third-seeded Weir girls’ soccer team made quick work out of sixth-seeded Tyler Consolidated.
The Red Riders recorded seven goals in the first half, and the girls from Hancock County tacked on three more in the second half to defeat the Silver Knights, 10-0, via mercy rule in a West Virginia Class AA-A Region 1 Quarterfinal Monday night at home up at Jimmmy Carey Stadium.
“It was a good night,” Weir (6-10-2) head coach Jeremy Angelo said. “They girls came out and played well. They moved well. They passed well. They talked. We had more than just a couple different girls score goals. We had a couple newer girls who have not scored before score. Our attitude’s well. The girls were excited. They were happy.
“Tyler Consolidated came up and played. They played hard. They just didn’t come up here to get beat. They came up here to do some things.”
The Red-and-Black netted the game-ending goal with 18:04 left to play in the second half.
“It is always nice to play a game at home,” Angelo said.
With the win, Weir will now play No. 2 seed and Hancock County rival Oak Glen at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the regional semifinals on the road up at the Bears’ Den. Oak Glen (14-7) advanced to the regional semifinals by defeating No. 7 seed Magnolia, 9-0, Monday night at home.
“It seems like we never play them just once,” Angelo said about the Golden Bears. “It is usually two times. In many years it has been three times, but two is the norm. When we are in the same class in the OVAC, we usually play three times, but we are not going to be in the same class for the next couple of years.”
Kameryn Mallas collected a hat trick and three assists to lead the way offensively for the girls from Hancock County against Tyler Consolidated, while Elliana Noel tallied two goals and three assists and Gianna Siegel scored two goals and dished out two assists. Also, Ryann Jeter recorded a goal and two assists, and Mila White and TK Jones each ended up with a goal.
Bella Weber made two saves in goal for the hosts.
Alexis Rhodes made 12 saves in goal for the girls in white.
The girls from Tyler County end the season with a record of 1-17. The game was the final one for Tyler Consolidated four seniors – MaKenna Martin, Gracelyn Smith, Camryn Westbrook and Addison Blosser.
“Tyler Consolidated left the OVAC, but they are in our same region,” Angelo said. “We may play them during the regular season. It depends on the year if we are able to schedule a game against them, but they are in our region, so we may see them in the postseason. It’s funny how some teams come into the OVAC and how some teams go.”
Oak Glen defeated Weir, 4-2, in a Saturday afternoon game Aug. 29 on the road.
“The first time we played them we had 12 players, and they beat us, 4-2,” Angelo said. “They were missing one goal, and we were missing a couple. It was a good game. Both teams played well. Both teams have the potential to score goals, and both teams have the potential to give up goals. We will have to see how it goes.
“The games are always fun. It is a rivalry. It doesn’t matter if the games are here or there. The best team usually wins. That has been the case in the last nine of 10 years. Whoever is the best team, usually wins. It is going to be a fight. Both teams play hard. There is nothing dirty. It is going to be a hard-fought game. It is a rivalry.”
