Big Red rolls on senior night

By ANDREW GRIMM 3 min read

STEUBENVILLE -- Senior night tends to be an event that fires up a team before a game. It certainly was for the Big Red girls soccer team on Monday night.

Taking on Edison on senior night at Harding Stadium, Steubenville came flying out of the gates and scored twice in the first 1:03 of the game on the way to rolling to a 10-1 victory over the Wildcats.

“It’s always good to win on senior night,” Big Red head coach Annie Cutri said. “It’s good to get a win late in the season to help build the confidence going into the tournament. We came out fired up and ready to go.

“We told them (on Saturday) we have to shoot, and it was good to see that mentality carry over right from the start today. We want to continue that mentality going forward.”

The win is the fourth-straight for Big Red, now 9-6-2, and closes their regular season on a high note headed to the tournament.

Big Red honored its five seniors -- Gianna Thomas, Kenzy Petrelle, Ali Pierce, Adrianna Crabtree and Jolee Lombardo -- prior to the game and four of the five scored a goal in the victory.

“It’s great to celebrate them and for them to win on their senior night,” Cutri said.

Thomas got the party started with a goal off of a corner kick in the opening minute, then seconds later Brynn Bowers brought the ball right back into the attacking end and made it 2-0, and the tone was set.

After things settled down a little, Thomas scored again, once again off of a corner kick opportunity, making it 3-0 in the 15th minute.

Making it quick back-to-back goals for a second time, Pierce connected just over a minute later, also off a corner kick play.

Just past the midway mark of the opening half, Petrelle snuck a shot past Edison keeper Kloe Riley, who made several impressive saves on the night, for a 5-0 lead.

Lidia Rea connected about five minutes later with a shot that went off the goalie and in, then just over a minute later Lombardo connected on a long shot to make it a 7-0 Big Red lead at halftime.

After Riley was able to keep the scoring at bay for nearly 30 minutes in the second half, Kaylee Lewis broke through again with just over 11 minutes to play, then just over a minute later Kendall Buchanan made it 9-0.

Edison got on the board with about six minutes to play when Ella Bright connected on a penalty kick after being taken down on a good chance.

Delaney Tucker capped the scoring, sending a hard shot on goal that Riley got a piece of but fell in behind her.

BIG WIN ON SATURDAY

NEW CONCORD – Thomas and Lombardo each tallied a goal leading the Big Red girls’ soccer team to a 2-0 victory against John Glenn Saturday afternoon on the road. Saccoccia chipped in with an assist for the victors. Jodei Green made four saves in goal.

It’s tournament time for Big Red, who rematches John Glenn at home on Oct. 21 in the East District tournament opening round.

“We know what they have, they know what we have, it should be a good game,” Cutri said. “I think if we play like we did in the second half on Saturday, we should be pretty solid.”
