STEUBENVILLE – It is not easy to score goals, however, Big Red’s Brynn Bowers and Indian Creek’s Kaydence Walker at times made it look that way.
Bowers and Walker each recorded hat tricks, however, it was Bowers’ team that came out on top.
Big Red built a big lead before holding for a 7-3 victory in the third game of the 15th Annual Together We Care event Saturday afternoon on Reno Saccocia Field inside historic Harding Stadium.
“We had a week off,” Big Red (6-6-2) head coach Annie Cutri said. “It has been a while since we have played. It took us a while to find our groove in the first half. We cleaned up some mistakes. We played well as a team. We had some good through ball passes. We passed down the middle. We had a lot of girls involved. Overall, we played well.”
Bowers recorded three goals and two assists to lead the way offensively for the Red-and-Black. Also, Kenzy Petrelle tallied two goals and an assist, Jaylin Crites contributed a goal and an assist and Gianna Thomas collected one goal. Finally, Kendall Buchanan delivered two assists.
Jodeci Green made seven saves in goal for the hosts.
Walker recorded all three goals for the Redskins (6-10).
Big Red took a 7-1 lead during the second half bringing the running clock into play, however, Walker responded with a goal to bring the running clock to an end before tallying another one to pull her team to within 7-3. Walker had an opportunity to net her fourth goal of the game, however, Green was able to get a hand on the shot, and it ended up bouncing off the crossbar keeping Big Red’s advantage at four goals.
“Brynn was upset she did not score more,” Cutri said. “We just want her to keep shooting and not get hung up on it. We want her to continue to get after it. In the second half, we wanted to give some other girls some minutes, and Kaydence was able to take advantage of that. She was able to produce the goals for Indian Creek.”
The awards for Offensive and Defensive MVPS for both teams were announced following the end of game. For Big Red, Bowers was named Offensive MVP, while Green was named her team’s Defensive MVP. Walker was named Offensive MVP for Indian Creek, while Cora Barcalow was named Defensive MVP.
“Jodeci had some good saves, and Brynn had a hat trick,” Cutri said. “Barcalow did a good job on defense controlling the middle of the field.”
Indian Creek is scheduled to play Jefferson County rival Catholic Central at 6 p.m. Tuesday night at home at Ketttlewell Stadium.
Big Red is slated to play Oak Glen at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night at home.
