EAST DISTRICT TOURNAMENT
BIG RED’S STRONG SEASON CONCLUDES
ZANESVILLE -- The strong season for the Big Red golf team came to a close on Monday in the Division II East District Tournament at Eagle Sticks Golf Club in Zanesville.
Steubenville placed eighth overall with a team score of 342. Only the top two teams, district champion St. Clairsville and runner up River View, advanced to the state tournament
“While today wasn't the result we were hoping for, there is a lot to be proud of from this team and this season,” Big Red head coach Joe Garay said. “We battled through plenty of ups and downs, qualified for the District Tournament as a team and continued to compete until the very end. These guys were at the course 24/7. All season long, they wanted to get better. They put in the work, they battled through tough rounds, and most importantly, they never quit.
“A special thank you to our three seniors -- Andrew Matzorkis, Jaggar Rawson, and Noah Kokiko. I am thankful for everything they have done for this program. It has been an absolute pleasure having those guys on our team, and they will definitely be missed. They have left their mark on Big Red Golf, and I couldn't be more proud of the careers they had.”
Matzorkis paced Big Red at districts with a score of 80, while Kokio shot an 86, Rawson an 87, while Patrick Jenkins and Gino Scaffidi each shot 89.
Steubenville finished the season with a 22-9 overall mark.
“For our returning players, the work starts now,” Garay added. “We have a good core coming back next season, but we all know the task in front of us. There will be expectations, there will be competition, and there will be work to do. We need to take what we learned this year, keep improving, and come back hungry.
“Thank you to everyone who supported Big Red Golf throughout the season. Thank you to our players, parents, families, our school and administration, and everyone who cheered us on along the way.
“The season may be over, but the work doesn't stop. Proud of this team. Proud of this season. Proud to be Big Red.”

WINTERSVILLE -- The Indian Creek girls soccer team put together an offensive outburst to earn a season sweep of rival Edison on Monday evening.
After winning the first meeting earlier in the season at Edison, the Redskins blanked the Wildcats on their home turf, 10-0, at Kettlewell Stadium.
Kaydence Walker tallied a hattrick for Creek, now 6-8, while Payton Rath and Maryn Barcalow each recorded two goals. Cora Barcalow, McKenna Puskarich and Chloe Flesher each tallied a goal as well.
Creek is slated to travel to Oak Glen on Wednesday, while Edison (3-10) does not play again until next week when it visits East Liverpool on Oct. 5.
