WELLSBURG – The gold medals are heading south.
The John Marshall boys’ cross country team and the Shadyside girls’ team captured the team titles at the 2026 Bryan Fritz Memorial Invitational Wednesday evening at Brooke.
The boys from Marshall County brought home the team title with 28 points. Following John Marshall in the team standings were Wheeling Park with 55, Big Red with 64 and Weir with 74.
Those four teams were the only ones with team scores as Brooke, Harrison Central, Shadyside, Linsly, Magnolia, Toronto, Catholic Central and Cameron did not record a team point.
While the Green-and-Gold did not record a team point, the Bruins brought home the gold on the individual side of things as Brooke’s Gavin Scott finished the 5K race in first place with a time of 17:33.34.
Behind Scott, John Marshall’s Braxten Ullom placed second with a time of 18:49.79, while Big Red’s Jude Kimble ended up in third place with a time of 19:08.87.
Scott was joined in the top 10 by teammates Charlie McCoy, who finished in seventh place with a time of 19:35.64, and Levi Stewart, who placed 10th with a time of 20:38.63.
The Monarchs also had three runners finish in the top ten. Joining Ullom on the list were Lance Icard, who placed eighth with a time of 19:59.76, while teammate Carson Fitzpatrick, finished in ninth place with a time of 20:26.46.
Magnolia’s Manowah Vaughn finished fourth in the race with a time of 19:12.96, while Catholic Central’s George Hanlin finished fifth with a time of 19:16.67.
Locally, Liam Antill was the top finisher for the Red Knights as he finished in 16th place with a time of 21:24.97, while Hunter Patterson led the charge for the Huskies. Patterson placed 18th with a time of 21:47.82.
On the girls’ side of things, Shadyside finished in first place with 42 points. Behind the Tigers were John Marshall with 61 points and Wheeling Park with 75 points. Catholic Central and Big Red were the only other two schools to finish with any team points. As a team, Catholic Central finished fourth with 79 points, while Big Red finished fifth with 98.
Also, Brooke, Madonna, Linsly, Weir, Cameron and Magnolia did not produce a team point.
The Tigers not only won the team title on the girls’ side, but the girls from Belmont County had the individual winner as well as Chloe Meholovitch finished first with a time of 19:53.55.
Behind Meholovitch, Wheeling Park’s Laylah Burkhart placed second with a time of 21:22.26, while Brooke’s Elizabeth Edgell ended up in third place with a time of 21:27.60.
Meholovitch was joined in the top 10 by teammate Jaylynne Johnson, who finished fourth with a time of 22:32.01.
The Cadets also had two runners finish in the top 10. First, Teanna Galberth finished sixth with a time of 22:58.46, while teammate Annabelle Holt finished in seventh place with a time of 23:08.22.
Madonna, Weir and Catholic Central all had one runner finish in the top 10. For the Blue Dons, Sophia Soly finished fourth with a time of 22:42.12, Lea Young ended up in ninth place for the Red Riders with time of 23:44.11 and Claire Fallnery finished in 10th place for the Crusaders. Flannery ended the race with a time of 23:500.
John Marshall’s Lily Williams placed eighth in the race with a time of 23:32.65.
Big Red’s Gena Smith was the top individual finisher for the Red-and-Black as the senior finished 13th with a time of 24:38.93.
Triadelphia finished first finished first on the boys’ side at the middle school level as the school ended the day with 28 points. Moundsville ended up in second place with 41 points, while Shadyside placed third with 94 points.
Moundsville’s Nathan Gomez captured the individual gold as he finished the 2K race in first place with a time of 11:30.01.
As a team, Moundsville finished first on the girls’ side of things with 40 points. Also, Shadyside placed second with 51 points, while Sherrard ended up third with 68 points.
Individually, Cameron’s Jocelyn Stewart finished first with a time of 13:18.11.
