LOST CREEK -- The Oak Glen football team began the season with an emotion win against Hancock County rival Weir. Unfortunately, Week 2 did not go as well for the Golden Bears as River defeated Oak Glen, 49-14, last Friday night at home.
The boys from northern Hancock County hit the road once again this week as Oak Glen is set to take on South Harrison at 7 p.m. Friday night at Gary Barnette Field.
The two schools are about two-and-a-half-hours away from each other.
The game will be the first home game of the season for South Harrison.
Like the Golden Bears, the Hawks enter this week's matchup with a record of 1-1. South Harrison defeated Braxton County, 14-0, in Week 1 on the road to open the season on a positive note, however, things did not go as well for the Hawks last week as Lincoln defeated South Harrison, 27-20, at home to drop the Hawks down to .500 on the season.
Oak Glen shut out county-rival Weir, 35-0, in the opener before giving up 49 points last week against the River. In order to be successful on defense against the Hawks, the Golden Bears are going to have to be able to stop the run.
The boys from Harrison County have ran for 551 yards and four touchdowns on the ground this season, while they have only throw for 32 yards on the season. The Hawks have not thrown a touchdown pass this season.
Senior running back Shepard Paugh leads the way on the ground for the Hawks. Paugh has produced 288 yards and a touchdown on the ground on 41 carries, He is averaging seven yards a carry.
Also, running back Zane Harlow has tallied 134 yards and two touchdowns on the ground on 32 carries. He averages 4.2 yards a tote.
Sophomore quarterback Lucas Nutt, who has taken over the starting duty for the Hawks this season, has nine carries and a touchdown on the ground. His longest run of the season has covered eight yards. Through the air, Nutt has completed 2-of-6 passes for 32 yards and a touchdown on the season. He has also throw two interceptions.
Paugh has accounted for all of the receiving stats for South Harrison this season.
Paugh plays linebacker on defense for the Hawks, and he is the team's leading tackler with 20 on the season. The other Hawks with double digits in tackles are defensive back Xavier Tustin with 16, linebacker Gabe Bartlett with 12 and Nutt, who is a defensive back, has 11.
South Harrison entered this season coming off back-to-back winning seasons. The Hawks lost in the first round of the West Virginia playoffs last season.
