YOUNGSTOWN -- The Big Red football team passed its biggest test so far.
Steubenville went on the road for the first time this season to battle Cardinal Mooney Friday night at Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium, and fended off the Cardinals for a hard-fought 21-16 victory.
The win improves Big Red to 4-0. The game was a match up of teams ranked No. 1 in their divisions by MaxPreps, Big Red in Division III and Mooney (2-2) in Division V.
Big Red opened the scoring with a 10-yard Stephen McShan touchdown in the opening quarter. After Cardinal Mooney got on the board with a field goal late in the first to make it 7-3 after one, James Turner extended the Big Red led to 14-3 with a 5-yard scoring run with 7:30 to go before halftime.
The Cardinals scored two and half minutes later to answer, but missed the PAT to make it a 14-9 Big Red lead at halftime.
James Turner added his second scoring run of the night in the third quarter, this time a three-yard plunge with 7:25 left in the quarter to make it 21-9, which remained the score headed to the fourth quarter.
Mooney, after a penalty negated an interception, scored on a long touchdown pass to pull within 21-16 with under five minutes to play, and got a stop to get the ball back, but the Big Red defense got a big sack and then forced a turnover on downs to seal the deal on the victory.
Big Red heads on the road again next week to battle Indian Valley in a clash of unbeatens. The Braves (3-0) had a bye week this week.
