NEWCOMERSTOWN -- The Toronto football team is looking to continue its winning ways this week, however, it will not be easy as the Red Knights face off against a tough opponent in the form of Newcomerstown.
The Red Knights and Trojans will meet for the third-straight season when they get together for a game at 7 p.m. Friday night out at Lee Stadium.
Both teams opened the 2026 seasons with a win.
The boys from the Gem City got the season started off on the right foot as Toronto shut out Southern Local, 33-0, last week up at Wigwam Stadium.
"Overall, it was a good game," Toronto (1-0) head coach Jaret Aubiel said. "We saw some things we wanted to see, but there are still some things we need to work on. Overall, I was happy with the win."
The Red-and-White had some of its younger players step up and play key roles in last week's victory against the Indians.
"We made some initial errors, but once we settled in we stepped up and took care of business," Aubiel said. "They did a good job. It was a good experience for them."
On the other side, Newcomerstown opened the season with a 32-20 victory out at Crooksville.
Toronto defeated Newcomerstown, 26-16, last season at home inside the friendly confines of Clarke Hinkle Field. Last season's matchup proved to be a hard-fought game.
"We expect the same thing this year," Aubiel said. "They are very good. They do a great job with their double tight wishbone offense. They have athletes all over the field. Their offensive and defensive lines are very good. It is going to be a huge challenge for us."
The Trojans continue to have the same philosophy they have had on both sides of the ball.
"They do the same thing," Aubiel said. "They had a few kids coming back this season. They do what they do very well. It is going to be a tough game. They have the same identity, and they are the same team. Newcomerstown is definitely going to be a challenge for us."
Newcomerstown defeated Toronto, 34-6, in 2024 at home.
"We had five or six turnovers in the game," Aubiel said. "The final score was 34-6. It was not a good night. Newcomerstown is a tough place to play. They have a great home environment. You get the whole nine yards when you go to Newcomerstown for a football game."
Toronto knows it is going to take another strong performance to leave Tuscarawas County with a win Friday night.
"We are going to have to get stops, and we are going to have make every possession on offense count," Aubiel said. "Hopefully, we will be able to come out with a win."
