CADIZ - St. Clairsville took a giant step towards its seventh consecutive Buckeye 8 boys' golf championship Monday during wet conditions at the par-72 Cadiz Country Club.
The Red Devils shot a four-player total of 2-over par 290 to take a 13-shot advantage over second-place Union Local. Martins Ferry sits in third with a score of 310, followed by Beaver Local (321) and Barnesville (345) to round out the top 5 teams.
Individually, the medalist race is shaping up to be a good one as 13 players are within seven shots of the lead.
Red Devils senior Mavrik Malin leads the way with a 2-under 70, which was one shot better than teammate Beau Mooney. The Purple Riders' Dylan Pielech is third at 72, followed by St. Clairsville's Ryan Mooney at 73. Landen Hanasky leads the Jet with a 74, while Leo Zambori fired a 74 for Martins Ferry.
Harrison Central sits in sixth place with a team score of 346, led by Cash Meadows’ score of 77.
Brooke is seventh with a 353, Carter Neilson leading the Bruins with an 83. Indian Creek is 10th at a score of 401, Riley Guskea firing a 76.
Buckeye Local did not have enough player for a team score but Dugan Dobrovich carded a 80 in the individual scores.
The two-day tournament will conclude with the second round at Belmont Hills Country Club on September 1. After the second round, the top six golfers will be named first team all-conference and the next six placers will be named honorable mention, along with the crowning of the overall team champion.
