BIG RED GETS CLOSE WIN IN HOME TRI
STEUBENVILLE -- The Big Red golf team narrowly out-dueled Indian Creek to top a home tri-match on Monday and add two wins to their season total.
Big Red shot a team score of 172 at the Steubenville Country Club, seven strokes ahead of Indian Creek’s 179. Wellsville, the third team in the match, carded a 228.
Steubenville senior Andrew Matzorkis carded an even-par 36 for the individual low round and match medalist honors.
Also for Big Red, Noah Kokiko and Gino Scaffidi each carded scores of 45, while Joel Elliott shot a 46, Jaggar Rawson a 47 and Pat Jenkins a 50.
“While we are happy to come away with the wins, we know there is another level this team needs to reach,” Big Red head coach Joe Garay said. “We’ve been fortunate over the last few weeks to find ways to win without necessarily playing our best team golf. As we get closer to tournament time, we need to get those numbers down.
“There is plenty of work to do, and we’ll continue to put in that work every day.”
The victories improve Big Red’s season mark to 14-4 overall and 7-2 in duels.
Indian Creek’s Riley Guskea shot a 40 to lead the Redskins, who also got a 43 from Garrin Clark, a 46 from Zeke Roe, a 50 from Maddox Barnett, a 58 from David Pawelczyk and a 59 from Will Kelly.
Darnell Roe led Wellsville with a 52.
Big Red is back in action on Thursday hosting Edison at Steubenville Country Club.
