BROOKE STARTS WITH A BIG WIN
HAMLIN -- The Brooke football team started its season with a big victory, making the four-hour trip to Lincoln County a successful one with a 46-6 win.
Kamden Sperringer had huge night for the Bruins, throwing five touchdown passes. His TD tosses went to Micheal Gibson (35 yards), Bryden Horstin (55 yards and 60 yards), Rylan Figgs (12 yards) and Jack Garvey (26 yards).
Cole Bolen ran for a 1-yard score for the Bruins, who led 46-0 at halftime, and Kaleb Neilsen returned an interception 45 yards for a score.
The Bruins have a bye week next week before their home opener Sept. 11 against Cambridge.
CRUSADERS FALL ON THE ROAD
STRASBURG -- Catholic Central’s four-game road swing got off to a tough start on Friday as the Crusaders dropped a 28-0 decision on the road at Strasburg.
Central, now 0-2, travels to Bishop Rosecrans next Friday.
TORONTO STARTS 2-0
NEWCOMERSTOWN -- The Toronto football team went on the road to Newcomerstown on Friday and earned a hard-fought 27-20 victory for a 2-0 start the season.
Max Rebich went 15 of 21 for 256 yards and three touchdowns, Colt Joynson being on the receiving end of seven of those passes for 186 yards and two scores.
Drake Bouscher had 16 carries for 84 yards and a score and had 14 tackles on defense.
The Red Knights host Brookfield next Friday in their home opener.
MADONNA FALLS IN OPENER
BAKER -- The Madonna football team made it’s return to the field on Friday, but its return to the win column will have to wait another week.
The Blue Dons fell to perennial Class A power East Hardy on the road, 66-12.
Madonna is set to host Van next Friday night in its home opener.
EDISON FALLS AT CARROLLTON
CARROLLTON -- The Edison football team dropped a 23-6 decision on the road at Carrollton on Friday night to fall to 0-2.
The Wildcats lone touchdown came from Brett Hellyer.
Edison is home on Thursday night to host Monroe Central in its home opener.
HUSKIES PULL AWAY
CADIZ -- The Harrison Central football team bounced back in a big way Friday, pulling away from visiting East Palestine for a 47-14 victory in their home opener at Wagner Field.
The Huskies (1-1) racked up 410 yards of offense, 327 of which came on the ground.
Olin Wade tallied 167 yards and two scores on 16 carries while also having two interceptions on defense. Kingston Smith had 71 yards and two scores on eight carries. Lance Smith had a rushing score and an interception. Colson Crothers tallied four catches for 78 yards and two scores and Hunter Snyder had a fumble recovery.
The Huskies host Strasburg next Friday.
PANTHERS FALL TO RIVER
YORKVILLE -- The Buckeye Local football team dropped a 40-6 loss to visiting River on Ring of Honor night at World War II Memorial Stadium on Friday.
Jonas Eddy led the Panthers run game with 33 yards on six carries, while Blake Worwa threw for 73 yards and a score for the Panthers. Kaden Littlejohn caught the TD pass and had 124 yards.
The Panthers honored Nathan Schaal, a 2009 Buckeye Local graduate; and the late Dick Thurne, coach for the former Buckeye South High School, prior to the game.
The Panthers travel to Shadyside next Friday.
