Post 33 drops regional opener to St. C

MARIETTA -- Steubenville Post 33 got on the board first on Tuesday taking on St. Clairsville Post 159 on the opening day of the Ohio American Legion Region 4 Tournament.

St. Clairsville, however, was able to score the last 12 runs of the game to start their quest for the state tournament with a 12-1 victory over the youthful Steubenville squad down at Marietta College.

The double elimination tournament continues today. Post 33 (0-10) will need a win to keep playing. St. Clairsville, which improved its mark on the season to 11-6, goes to the winner’s bracket.

Steubenville got on the board first in the top of the first with a two-out Chase Kuhn RBI single, scoring Jonathan Wineman who led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and got to third on a ground out and fielder’s choice.

Wineman and Nolan Greiner each also had a base knock in the game for Post 33.

St. Clairsville plated three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead and did not look back, adding four more in the bottom of the second inning before tacking on five in the fourth to bring the run rule into play.

For Post 159 Jaxon Starks had a solo home run, Dylan Blon had three hits and four RBIs, Roby Hanna had two hits, Eli Smith had a double and two RBIs, Max Miller had a triple, Matheson King had two hits and Eligha Hill and Caiden Bailey each had a hit and an RBI.

On the mound, Wineman went the first three innings and took the loss for Post 33, striking out three and walking one. Joseph Vranish tossed an inning with a strikeout and a walk.

For Post 159, Hill was the winning arm with three punch outs in three innings. Miller struck out the side in the fourth and Starks closed things out in the fifth, striking out one.
