WEIRTON — The Weir High baseball team got its tournament off to a good start on Monday.
The Red Riders battled back from an early deficit and took a 4-1 win over visiting Tyler Consolidated on Monday at home in the opening round of the Class AA Region 1 tournament.
The Red Riders (16-16) are the No. 4 seed and with the win advance to visit top seed Wheeling Central today in Wheeling.
Tyler Consolidated took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but ended being the only run the Silver Knights would score.
Weir starter Cayden Braswell fired the first five strong innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk to earn the win, while Matt Geer came on and fired a scoreless final two innings, striking out one for a two-inning save.
The Red Riders took the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Jonathan Horstman was hit by a pitch and Teddy Glyptis started a rally with a one-out double, then both scored on Nico Glass’ single. Nick DiMatteis and Aleks Zanieski singled back-to-back to load the bases, then Braswell helped his own cause with a sac fly to make it 3-1.
An inning later, Horstman hit an RBI single to make it 4-1, which ended up being the final score.
The winner of today’s game against Wheeling Central is one win away from the state tournament. The loser will take on Tyler Consolidated in an elimination game on Wednesday.
