Madonna rally comes up just short
MORGANTOWN — The Madonna baseball team battled back against Cameron on Wednesday in a winner’s bracket showdown in the Class A Region 1 tournament at Mylan Park, but the Blue Dons rally came up just short.
Madonna (13-13) fell behind the top-seeded Dragons 2-0 early and, after tying the game, trailed 6-2 going to the sixth, before rallying back to within 6-5 in the seventh, but the comeback bid came up a run short as that was the final score.
Madonna got three hits from Reno Fuscardo, two hits and an RBI from Connor Lancaster and an RBI each from Evan Kaczmarek and Luke Wingett.
Jacob Lazear fired the first 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking one in taking the loss for the Dons. Two of the runs against him were unearned. Fuscardo fired the final 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout and a walk.
The Blue Dons will now face either Clay-Battelle, Clarksburg Notre Dame or Valley in an elimination game later in the week needing a win to earn another shot at Cameron.
