Baseball regionals are set in West Virginia
WEIRTON – The West Virginia high school baseball teams are on the road to Charleston.
The teams in the state learned their postseason fates when the regional brackets for all four classes were released Wednesday. The regional tournaments are set to begin Monday with the higher seed hosting the games throughout the tournament. Two teams from each region will advance to the state tournament.
Madonna is competing in the Class A Region 1 Tournament. The Blue Dons are the No. 4 seed. Madonna is looking to make a return trip to the state tournament this season. The Blue Dons lost in the state final last season.
Madonna is in the upper part of the bracket along with Cameron Clay-Battelle, Notre Dame and Valley.
In the first round, No. 8 seed Notre Dame will play No. 9 seed Valley at home in Game 1. The winner of that game will take on No. 1 seed Cameron in Game 3 Tuesday on the road while the loser drops down into the loser’s bracket.
Also on Tuesday, Madonna will play No. 5 seed Clay-Battelle in Game 2 at home at Bowman Field. The winner of that game will advanced to take on the winner of the other Tuesday game in Game 5 while the loser will drop down into the loser’s bracket.
The losers of Games 1 and 2 will meet in an elimination game in Game 4. The loser of Game 4 will be eliminated from postseason play while the winner will move on and play the loser of Game 3 in Game 6 with the loser of that one also being eliminated from the tournament.
The loser of Game 5 will play the winner of will play the winner of Game 6 in Game 7 to determine the team to come out of the loser’s bracket.
The winner of Game 5 will advance to the regional final to take on the winner of Game 7. The winner of Game 5 will only need to win once to secure the championship and move on to the state tournament, while the winner of Game 7 will have to win two games – Games 8 and 9 to make it.
The team’s in the other half of the bracket are Magnolia, Ritchie County, St. Marys and Trinity Christian. The Blue Eagles are the No. 2 seed, the Warriors are the No. 3 seed, the Blue Devils are seeded sixth and the Rebels are the seventh seed.
Magnolia will play Ritchie County in the first round Monday at home while Trinity Christian will play St. Marys at home.
Weir and Oak Glen will be competing in the Class AA Region 1 Tournament. The Red Riders are the No. 4 seed while the Golden Bears are sixth.
The two Hancock County schools will be on opposites of the bracket giving both teams a chance to make it down to the state tournament. Weir is in the upper bracket and Oak Glen is in the lower bracket.
Weir is joined in the upper bracket by No. 1 seed Wheeling Central and No. 5 seed Tyler Consolidated.
Weir is scheduled to play Tyler Consolidated in the first round Monday up at the Weir High Baseball Field. The winner of that game will take on Wheeling Central Tuesday with the loser dropping down into the loser’s bracket.
The winner of the game featuring the Maroon Knights will advance to the regional final while the other two teams will meet in an elimination game. The loser of that game will be eliminated from the tournament while the winner will go on and play Wheeling Central in the regional final. The remaining team from the winner’s bracket will just have to win once to advance while the team coming out of the loser’s bracket will have to win two games to advance to the state tournament.
Oak Glen is joined in the lower bracket by Doddridge County, Ravenswood and Williamstown. The Bulldogs are the No. 2 seed in the tournament, the YellowJackets are the No. 3 seed and the Red Devils are seeded seventh.
Doddridge County will take on Ravenswood in Game 1 Monday at home while Williamstown will play Oak Glen Monday at home in Game 2. Both games are in the first round. The winners of Monday’s game will meet Tuesday in Game 3 while the loser will play in an elimination game in Game 4.
The winner of Game 3 will advance to Game 6 – the regional final – while the loser will play the winner of Game 4 in an elimination game – Game 5. The loser of Game 4 will be eliminated from postseason play. The winner of Game 3 will only have to win one more game to advance to the state tournament while the teams coming out of the loser’s bracket will have to win twice to advance.
Brooke is competing in the Class AAA Region 1 Tournament. The Bruins are the No. 3 seed. The boys from Brooke County will be competing in the lower bracket of the tournament.
Brooke is joined in the bracket by East Fairmont and North Marion. The Bees are the No. 2 seed in the tournament, while the Raiders are seeded sixth.
Brooke is set to play North Marion in Game 1 in the first round Monday at home. The winner of that game will take on East Fairmont Tuesday on the road in Game 2.
The loser of Game 1 will play the loser of Game 2 in an elimination game – Game 3. The winners of Games 2 and 3 will meet in the regional final – Game 4. The team from the winner’s bracket will only have to win one game to make it down to the state tournament while the team from the loser’s bracket will have to win a pair of games.
John Marshall, Grafton and Fairmont Senior are the three teams competing in the upper bracket. The Monarchs are the No. 1 seed, the Bearcats are the No. 4 seed and the Polar Bears are seeded fifth.
Grafton will play Fairmont Senior in Game 1 in the first round Monday at home. The winner of that game will play No. 1 seed John Marshall in Game 2 Tuesday on the road.
The loser of Game 1 will play the loser of Game 2 in an elimination game – Game 3. The winners of Games 2 and 3 will meet in the regional final – Game 4. The team from the winner’s bracket will only have to win one game to make it down to the state tournament while the team from the loser’s bracket will have to win a pair of games.
There are no local teams in Class AAAA.
