Wildcats pounce on Creek

WINTERSVILLE – The Edison softball team displayed its offensive prowess against Jefferson County rival Indian Creek.

Edison delivered 14 hits on the day, and the Wildcats scored three or more runs in an inning four times en route to defeating the Redskins, 15-2, via mercy rule in five innings Saturday afternoon on the road.

“We came in focused, and we were able to execute what we worked on at practice,” Edison (7-1) head coach McKenzie Morrison said.

Edison’s offensive capabilities have been on full display all season as the Wildcats have scored five or more runs in all eight of its games this season, and the Silver-and-Black has tallied 14 runs twice to go along with a pair of 15-run outings – both of which have come against Indian Creek.

“We have been really strong at the plate,” Morrison said. “We know it is going to take everyone doing their part. We take pride in our offense. We just want to be consistent.”

Edison has scored 80 runs so far this season giving the Wildcats an average of 10 runs a game.

The Wildcats tallied three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0. Then, the victors recorded four in the third, five in the fourth and three more in the fifth.

The Redskins plated a pair of runs in their half of the fifth, but it was not enough to extend the game.

Edison ended the game with four extra-base hits – two doubles and two triples. Indian Creek collected two doubles in the loss.

Both teams used two pitchers.

Bristol Leanza started the game inside the circle for the visitors, and she came away with the win. She struck out two and walked one in her three innings of work. She was replaced to start the fourth by Gwen Stine, who pitched the final two innings. Stine struck out one and walked two in her time inside the circle.

“Bristol threw a great game,” Morrison said. “She pitched a shutout. Then, Gwen came and finished the game. We are proud of both of them. They are working hard at practice. They have gotten the job done so far.”

Tori Gross started for the Redskins, and she took the loss. Gross struck out two and walked one in her three innings in the circle. Maggie Blackburn pitched the final two innings. She did not record a strikeout or issue a walk.

Offensively for Edison, Sophia Henderson produced two singles, a double and an RBI, Alivia Hanlin delivered a single, a triple and three RBI and Bella Cronin tallied two singles and an RBI. Also, Chloe Peckens contributed a double and three RBI, Paige Sommerville delivered a triple and two RBI and Teagan Reynolds chipped in with a single and an RBI. Finally, Kloe Riley, Abby Boka and Chloe Cornish all collected a base hit.

For Indian Creek, Payton Rath produced a two-run double, Aziaih Wade added a double and Aaliyah Duke, Kylie Dray and Khila Chamberlain all collected a single.

Back-to-back singles by Boka and Henderson got the ball rolling for the Wildcats in the first, and the pair scored on a triple by Hanlin to give Edison an early 2-0 advantage. Then, Hanlin scored when Cronin reached on error to make the score 3-0.

Duke singled to lead off the home half of the inning for the hosts, however, a double play and a pop-up ended the inning with no harm being done.

The Wildcats were retired in order in the second, but the Redskins got a pair of runners on base thanks to a single by Dray and McKenna Puskarich drawing a walk, but a groundout to short ended the threat and the inning.

Edison pulled away in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Peckens cleared the bases with a double to right scoring Henderson, Hanlin and Cronin. Henderson and Cronin both reached via a single, while Hanlin reached on a fielder’s choice. The Wildcats extended their advantage to 7-0 when Peckens scored on an error.

Indian Creek got a runner on base to start the bottom half of the inning, however, three-straight outs ended the inning without a run being scored.

Edison increased its advantage to a dozen runs by scoring five times in the fourth. Boka was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and she scored on a double to right by Henderson to make the score, 8-0, before Hanlin singled home Henderson making it 9-0. Three batters later, Sommerville tripled to left scoring Hanlin and Cronin, who singled, to push the lead out to 11-0. Sommerville then scored on a groundout by Reynolds to make it a 12-0 ballgame.

Ade doubled with two outs in Indian Creek’s half of the fourth, however, then next batter struck out to end the inning.

The Wildcats scored a trio of runs in the fifth off miscues by the Redskins. First, Brea Shrieve scored on a passed ball, while Lydia Moore and Bailey Natcher scored on an error to complete the scoring for Edison.

In the bottom of the inning, Rath doubled to left scoring Blackburn and Olivia Hollenbeck to make the score 15-2, but it was not enough to continue the game as a groundout to first brought the game to a conclusion.

The Wildcats have now won five-straight games.

“We always want to compete no matter what,” Morrison said. “We want to come back strong. We want to learn from our losses. Everything we do we do as a team. We win as a team, and we lose as a team. We want to get better at practice, and we want to learn from our mistakes.”

Edison is scheduled to play Oak Glen at 4 p.m. Monday on the road.

“We are going to work really hard to get better, so we will be ready to go,” Morrison said.

The Wildcats defeated the Golden Bears, 5-2, in the two teams’ first meeting Thursday at home.

“We like playing Oak Glen,” Morrison said. “It’s always a great game, and it’s always great competition.”

Indian Creek is slated to play Buckeye 8 rival East Liverpool at 5 p.m. Monday at home.
