Weir baseball wins fourth-straight

WEIRTON – The Weir baseball team jumped on East Liverpool early, and the Red Riders kept the heat on the Potters.

Weir plated eight runs in the first three innings en route to a 10-2 victory Tuesday evening up at the Weir High Baseball Field.

With the win, Weir gets back to .500 on the season at 12-12. The win was their fourth in a row.

With the loss, East Liverpool is 2-17.

Mathew Geer started on the mound and picked up the win for Weir. Geer struck out two without walking a batter in his three innings of work on the mound. He was replaced to start the fourth by Liam Williamson, who struck out one without walking a batter in his two innings of relief work. Jonathan Horstman came on to pitch in the sixth. He did not record a strikeout while walking a batter. Kason Lash came on to pitch the seventh. Lash struck out one without issuing a walk.

Donovan Shallcross started and took the loss for East Liverpool. Shallcross did not record a strikeout while walking three in his two innings on the mound. He was replaced to start the third inning by Cooper Klein. Klein pitched the next two innings striking out two and walking two. Aiden Durst came to pitch in the fifth. Durst pitched the final two innings. He did not record a strikeout while issuing one free pass.

Weir struck first with a pair of runs on one hit in the home half of the first inning.

Teddy Glyptis and Nick DeMatteis drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Glyptis stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. DiMatteis also stole second to give the hosts two runners in scoring position, and Cayden Braswell singled to center to score the pair giving Weir an early 2-0 lead. The inning ended on a pop-up to first.

The Red Riders gained control in the second as the victors plated four runs on five hits to build a six-run lead.

Williamson drew a walk to lead off the inning, and he stole second base to move into scoring position. Then, Garrett Pettit doubled to left scoring Williamson increasing Weir’s advantage to 3-0. Next, Hortsman singled, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a single by DiMatteis making it, 4-0. Aleks Zanieski then doubled to right scoring DiMatteis making the score, 5-0. Braswell followed with a double to left scoring Zanieski to extend the Red Riders’ advantage out to 6-0. The Potters were able to get out of the inning on a groundout.

The Red Riders plated a pair of runs in the third to increase their lead to eight runs.

First, Williamson walked for the second time, stole second once again and scored on a single to center by Hortsman to give the home team a 7-0 advantage. Then, Glyptis walked for the second time moving Hortsman up to second before Hortsman scored on another RBI single by DiMatteis to make it an 8-0 ballgame. The boys from Columbiana County were able to get out of the inning thanks to a strikeout.

The Red Riders collected another run in the fourth to extend their lead even more.

Braswell led off the inning with a single to left, and he advanced to second via defensive indifference. Braswelll would advance to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an error to make the score, 9-0.

The Potters were retired in order on three groundouts in the fifth giving Weir an opportunity to end the game early with a run in the home half of the inning. Weir had an opportunity to do that, however, the Red Riders were unable to take advantage of it. Weir got a runner on base to start the inning on an error, however, he was erased on the basepaths thanks to a double play. The Red Riders got a second runner on base on a walk, however, a flyout ended the inning and sent it to the sixth.

The Blue-and-White tallied two runs in the sixth.

Shallcross started the inning off by being hit by a pitch before advancing to second on a passed ball. Then with one out, Elliot Fitch doubled to center scoring Shallcross to cut the Potters deficit down to 9-1. After a walk, Fitch scored on an error to make the score, 9-2. Weir was able to get out of the inning thanks to a flyout to Williamson in center.

Weir got a run back in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Mason Scott, who was batting for Braswell, doubled to center. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Geer giving the Red Riders a 10-2 advantage. The inning came to a close on a groundout.

East Liverpool was retired in order in the seventh to bring the game to a close.

Braden Duke and Carstin Suznevich also contributed singles for East Liverpool.

Weir is scheduled to play Indian Creek at 5 p.m. Thursday at home.

East Liverpool is slated to play United at 5 p.m. Thursday on the road.
