Top-ranked Toronto blanks Catholic Central

TORONTO — The Toronto baseball team played a solid all-around game against Jefferson County rival Catholic Central.

Toronto tallied 11 runs in the first three innings, limited Catholic Central to just one hit and did not make an error as the Red Knights defeated the Crusaders, 11-0, via the run rule in four-and-a-half innings Tuesday evening at the Knights Baseball Complex.

“We really hit the ball well all day long,” Toronto (8-1) head coach Brian Perkins said. “We stayed back, and we had good discipline at the plate.”

The boys from the Gem City collected 10 hits in the game — three of which went for extra bases.

“Toronto is among the more complete teams in the valley, and they showed that today,” first-year Catholic Central (1-6) head coach Andrew Henry said. “They hit the ball, they made the routine plays and they had good pitching. You need those three things to win games.”

Jacob Parissi pitched well en route to picking up the win for the Red Knights. Parissi struck out four without walking a batter while only allowing one hit — a lead-off single in the top of the fourth.

“Jacob is only a sophomore,” Perkins said. “He’s coming along. He pounded the zone with all three pitches. We played really well on defense behind him. He did not walk a batter. We are very excited about Jacob.”

The visitors used two pitchers in the game. Freshman Luke Bryan started on the mound, and he took the loss. Bryan struck out one and walked three in his 1 2/3 innings of work. He was replaced with two outs in the second by Joseph Vranish. Vranish struck out three while walking one in his 2 1/3 innings of relief.

“All in all, I would say he threw very well,” Henry said about Bryan. “He threw strikes. We brought Joseph Vranish in in relief. I thought he threw the ball well. Toronto hit the ball well. We did not struggle on defense the way I have seen us struggle. There were a couple of plays we should have made that would have gotten us out of the inning. Defensively, I thought we played much better than we did (Monday).”

The hosts tallied two runs in the bottom of the first inning, six in the second and three in the third to account for the scoring in the game.

“We barreled the ball up,” Perkins said. “The guys are working hard in the cages, and it showed out on the field.”

Offensively for Toronto, Heath Thomas collected a single, a double and three RBI, Cayden McGrath contributed a single, a triple and an RBI and Drake Bouscher recorded a triple and an RBI. Also, Michael Henry tallied two singles and an RBI, Lucas Wiseman and Gunnar Newbold each ended up with a single and an RBI and Max Rebich produced a single.

Zach Bryan singled for the lone hit for the Crusaders.

“We only had one hit, but we put the ball in play,” Coach Henry said. “They made the plays. It is what it is. Sometimes they fall in, and sometimes they don’t.”

The game was delayed by weather with the Red Knights leading 2-0 with two outs in the first.

“We haven’t played Catholic Central for a few years,” Perkins said. “It is good to play them again.”

Toronto is scheduled to play Ursuline at 5 p.m. today back at the KBC.

“Things are going well,” Perkins said. “The guys have made a lot of progress. We did not hit the ball as well as we would have liked early on, but we have been picking it up. I am happy with how the guys are playing.”

Catholic Central is slated to play Weir at 5 p.m. Friday on the road up at the Weir High Baseball Field before taking on Wellsville Saturday on the road up at Hammond Park.

“We have been a long road stretch,” Coach Henry said. “It will be nice to play at home again.”

Catholic Central will return home to take on Wheeling Central Monday at Vaccaro Field.
