Huskies top Oak Glen for huge win
NEW MANCHESTER — In a key battle prior to the OVAC tournament cutoff, the Harrison Central softball team boosted its chances of making the Class 4A field with a 4-0 win on the road at Oak Glen on Friday.
The teams entered the week fourth and fifth in a six team logjam for four spots. The cutoff to set the field was set for Saturday.
Kara Blackburn had two hits, Bailey Smith had a double and two RBIs and Jaylin Ward drove in a run for the Huskies (14-8).
Mikayala Pelegreen spun a compete game shutout, striking out four without a batter.
Kylie Robinson had a double for Oak Glen (14-8), while Mattie Carney struck out nine and walked two.
Both teams will find out if they made the field and who they will play if so over the weekend.
Madonna blanks Cameron
CAMERON — The Madonna softball team extended its current win streak to four on Friday with an 8-0 road blanking of Cameron.
The Blue Dons (16-3) got a homer, single and three RBIs from Kednal Ryan in the victory, while Peyton Conley had a triple and two singles and was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and walking one in tossing a complete game shutout.
Elaina Foresha had a double, single and an RBI, Breea Birkhimer tallied two singles and an RBI, and Maddie Owens and Kaleigh Gamble each drove in a run.
The Blue Dons were slated to play Burgettstown on Saturday before the OVAC Tournament cutoff. The Dons entered the week in first place in Class A and poised to make the field.
BASEBALL
Weir tops Burgettstown
WEIRTON — The Weir High baseball team made it wins on back-to-back days to end the week on Friday, topping visiting Burgettstown 5-3.
Matt Geer had a double, single and two RBIs and Niko Glass doubled in a run, while Cayden Braswell and Nick DiMatteis also had an RBI each.
DiMatteis and Liam Williamson each struck out three in a combined effort on the mound.
Weir High (10-12) is scheduled to visit Beaver Local on Monday.
Creek falls to Carrollton
MINGO JUNCTION — Indian Creek dropped a close, 2-0, decision to visiting Carrollton on Friday at Muth Field.
The Redskins (13-2) were held to two hits, a single each from Gavin Pownall and Logan Wedlake.
Creek entered the week leading the OVAC Class 4A standings and will found out who they will meet in next week’s semifinals over the weekend.
TRACK
Weir has strong showing at Brooke relays
WELLSBURG — Weir boys finished third overall and the girls second overall at Friday’s Brooke Relays.
For the boys, Landon Haught was first in the 400 and third in the 100 and 200. Johnathan Rhodes was second in the 800. The 4×100 team – Sincere Stevenson, Zach Howland, Daniel Howland and Landon Haught – placed third. The 4×400 team – Wyatt Majorie’s, Caden Lamp, Xavier Cunningham, and Johnathan Rhodes – placed third. Syncere Stevenson was third in the long jump.
For the girls, the shuttle hurdle relay team of Myleigh Clevenger, Gianna Siegel, Kamryn Mallas and Ella Kaufman won the event. The 4×400 team of Leah Young, Ryan Jeter, Madelyn Cramer and Gianna Siegal also topped the field. Clevenger was third in the 100 hurdles,, Siegal second and Young third in the 400 and Jeter second in the high jump.
The 4×100 team of Myleigh Clevemger, Kamryn Mallas, Ryan Jeter and Ella Kaufman was second and the 4×200 unit of Lea Young, Ella Kaufman, Adrienne Clausell and Gianna Siegal was third.
