Carney reaches milestone as OG sweeps a DH
MORGANTOWN – The Oak Glen softball team swept a pair of games on Saturday at Mylan Park, topping Ravenswood 15-1 and Doddridge County 9-1. In the process, junior ace Mattie Carney recorded her 400th career strikeout.
The Golden Bears, who are state-ranked in Class AA, have now won six-straight and are 11-4 on the season.
Against Ravenswood, Carney had a big game at the plate, too, hitting a double and single and driving in two runs. Mikalyn Balch and Cam Richards also each drove in a pair of runs.
Carney tossed the first four innings for the win in the circle, striking out eight without a walk. Danica Holden struck out one in a scoreless, hitless fifth to finish things.
In the second game, Carney tripled in two runs, Brayley Lash had a triple, single and an RBI, Balch had two hits and an RBI, Kynslee Landess had a double and single and an RBI, Kylie Robinson doubled in a run and Marleah Lough had two hits.
Carney tossed a six inning complete game, striking out 11 without a walk to reach the milestone.
Oak Glen hosts Big Red on Thursday.
Madonna splits, suffers first loss
WHEELING – The Madonna softball team won its first of two games to push its season-opening win streak to a dozen, but dropped the second game of the day to suffer its first defeat of the season.
The Blue Dons, now 12-1, topped Linsly 10-4, but fell to Wheeling Central, 6-0.
In the win over the Cadets, Peyton Conley had a double, three singles and three RBIs finishing 4 for 4, Geena Birkhimer and Madi Owens each blasted a homer, had two hits and drove in two runs, Elaina Foresha doubled and Breea Birkhimer tallied an RBI.
Ryan tossed a complete game with three strikeouts and no walks.
In the loss to Wheeling Central, Conley struck out five and walked one while the Dons bats were held to four singles.
Madonna looks to bounce back at home on Tuesday in a big game with Trinity Christian.
Panthers sweep East Liverpool
EAST LIVERPOOL – The Buckeye Local softball team made it three-straight wins by topping East Liverpool in both games of a twinbill on the road Saturday, 3-0 and 8-3.
The wins move the Panthers above .500 at 5-4.
One day after her 1-0 complete game shutout at Brooke on Friday, Panthers ace Karlie Lander made it back-to-back complete game blankings with an eight inning, 12 strikeout one-hitter in the opener, which Buckeye Local won in extra innings without a hit.
In the second game, Lander again went the distance with 11 punchouts while also driving in a run at the plate with a double.
Necia Hosenfeld had two doubles and two RBIs and Danika Bauknecht had a double, single and three RBIs.
Buckeye Local is set to host Brooke today.
Huskies fend off Brooke
CADIZ – The Harrison Central softball team scored the first five runs of the game and led 6-1 through five innings, then fended off a Bruins rally to hang on for a 6-5 victory for a 6-5 win on Saturday.
E Jarvis had a solo homer, Bailey Smith tripled, singles and drove in a run, Denaly Stull had a double and a single, Kara Blackburn had two hits and Kam Crothers drove in two runs.
The Huskies M Johnson struck out five in a complete game in the circle.
For Brooke, Avery Rado had two doubles, Emma Bober had a double and a single, Jazmyn Wood doubled and drove in a run and Gabby Hornick knocked in two runs.
Rado struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Brooke (5-9) visits Buckeye Local today.
The Huskies (9-4) travel to East Liverpool today.
BASEBALL
Red Knights blow out Carrick
TORONTO – The Toronto baseball team plated seven runs in the first inning and did not look back in rolling to a 20-0, five inning run rule victory over visiting Pittsburgh Carrick on Saturday.
The Red Knights (7-1) got a homer, single and two RBIs from Heath Thomas, a triple, double and single and three RBIs from Lucas Wiseman, a triple from Drake Bouscher, a double and single from Caden McGrath and a triple and an RBI from Michael Henry.
Bouscher tossed the first three innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Toronto hosts Catholic Central on Tuesday.
Creek walks-off Wheeling Park in extras
MINGO JUNCTION – The Indian Creek baseball team stayed undefeated with a thrilling walk-off, extra inning win over visiting Wheeling Park on Saturday when James Brothers’ RBI knock in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Redskins to a 5-4 victory.
Both teams scored three runs in the fourth, Park took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, but Creek (8-0) rallied in the seventh to force the extra frame then won it in the eighth.
Gavin Pownall, who crossed the plate on Brothers’ hit for the winning run, had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Luke McVicker and Garrin Clark each had three hits and Ian Starkey also plated a run.
Parker Heath tossed the first 4 2/3 in a no decision with three strikeouts and three walks, while Pownall went the last 3 1/3 in relief to earn the win, striking out two and walking two.
Creek is at Beaver Local today.
Bears edge Magnolia
NEW MANCHESTER – The Oak Glen baseball team edged out a 3-2 win over visiting Magnolia on Saturday.
The Golden Bears (5-10) got a triple and an RBI from James Rohbeck and Kaden Dragisich also drove in a run. Cam Carter had the winning knock in the bottom of the seventh.
Rohbeck tossed the first four innings with eight strikeouts, while Noah Willey fanned seven in the last three innings without a walk for the win in relief.
Oak Glen hosts Wheeling Central on Tuesday.
Bruins drop close game
WELLSBURG – The Brooke baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to visiting regional foe East Fairmont on Saturday.
Andrew Murdock had a homer, double and an RBI, Aiden Provenzano doubled and Geno Provenzano and Aidan Lathem each had an RBI.
Murdock struck out four and walked one in 6 2/3 innings on the mound.
Brooke visits Buckeye Local today.
