Bruins bounce back, finding groove ahead of tourney

WELLSBURG — Brooke softball coach Tommy Diserio knew all along what his team was capable of if it could put all the pieces together.

He’s starting to see them do just that with the tournament looming.

His Bruins got off to a fast start and kept the pedal down against visiting Toronto Tuesday evening, rolling to an 18-3 run rule victory for their fourth win their last five games and eighth win in their last 12 games.

“The bats came alive today,” Diserio said. “The girls fielded the ball well, the defense was on. We look like we’re firing on all cylinders now and that’s where we need to be going into regional time.”

The win was also a good bounce back for the Bruins (14-16), who had lost a heart-breaker on a walk-off homer at Wheeling Park the night before after leading for most of the game.

“We had a tough one (Monday) against Wheeling Park,” Diserio said. “The girls came out ready to go after that one. It was good to see them bounce back. We tell them we have to have short memories at every practice and every game. We have to put the mistakes behind us and make the next play and they showed that by how they bounced back today.”

On Tuesday, the Bruins plated four runs in each of the first three innings, then drove in six in the fourth to bring about the early end.

Maggie Diserio had a double, two singles and two RBIs, Emma Teller plated four runs with a double and a single, Emma Bober drove in two runs and Avery Rado and Jazmyn Wood each had two hits and an RBI.

Eden McKinney, who also had an RBI, struck out four and did not walk a batter for the win in the circle.

The Red Knights (10-10) struck first with a run in the top of the first, but found themselves in an 8-1 hole before they scored again.

After cutting the margin to 8-3 in the top of the third, Brooke made it 12-3 in the bottom half and were on their way to enacting the run rule.

Toronto got an RBI from Jaylee Brown. All three of their hits off of McKinney were singles.
