WVU baseball makes easy work of Maryland
RUNNING HARD — WVU’s Gavin Kelly races for third base on Tuesday against Maryland. - Benjamin Powell
Paul Schoenfeld continued to make the jump to Division I baseball look rather easy Tuesday. To that same effect, West Virginia also made it look pretty easy in knocking off Maryland, 10-3, inside Kendrick Family Ballpark.
Schonfield, an outfielder who transferred to WVU this season from Division II Colorado Mesa, went 3 for 5, including a run-scoring triple in the second inning. He’s now recorded a hit in every game but three for the Mountaineers (11-3) and will enter Big 12 play with a four-game hitting streak.
Schonfield drove in two runs and added a stolen base against the Terrapins (10-6), who have now lost six in a row against WVU. The Wichita, Kan. native raised his batting average to .340 on the season after batting .420 last season with the Mavericks. He leads WVU with 18 RBIs.
It was a day when the credit got spread around for the Mountaineers. WVU took a 2-0 lead in the first when Schonfield singled home Matt Ineich and Gavin Kelly later scored on Matthew Graveline’s ground ball.
WVU added four runs in the second inning. Tyrus Hall hit an RBI single that scored Armani Guzman and later scored himself on a double steal. Schonfield’s triple to deep center scored Kelly and he scored on Graveline’s RBI single.
As it turned out, that was all the run support WVU pitchers needed. Eight Mountaineers pitchers saw action, while limiting Maryland to just six hits.
David Hagen started on the mound for WVU. He went one inning and gave up a hit. Carson Estridge pitched three innings and allowed one hit.
Ian Korn pitched two innings and allowed no hits and Mac Stiffler and Bryant Yoak combined to go two innings. Weston Smith, last season’s West Virginia Player of the Year out of Hurricane, got two outs in the ninth, but allowed a solo home run to Franklin Pichardo Jr.
J.D. Costanzo gave up an infield single and a bases-loaded walk. Bryson Thacker picked up the final out in the ninth with the bases loaded. He gave up another bases-loaded walk, but then ended the game on a fielder’s choice out at second base.
Kelly extended his hitting streak to nine games. He was 1 for 3 and drove in two runs with a base hit in the third inning. During the streak, Kelly is hitting .500 (19 for 38) with two home runs and nine RBIs.
The Mountaineers will open the Big 12 portion of their season at 7:30 p.m. Friday with a three-game series at Bayor. WVU has won 10 in a row against the Bears. The Mountaineers are expected to start Dawson Montesa (2-2, 4.71 ERA) in the first game.
