Huskies bats start hot as cold weather pushes action to Wednesday
WINTERSVILLE — The weather was different and so was the result.
The Harrison Central softball team plated 11 runs in the top of the first inning against Buckeye 8 rival Indian Creek, and the Huskies tacked on another run in the second to go up by a dozen runs before the game was suspended with Harrison up 12-0 going into the third due to the cold weather Monday evening at Indian Creek.
“I have never seen anything like this in my life,” Harrison Central (0-1) head coach Darrin Young said. “The game will be resumed Wednesday. They said it was too cold. It’s no colder than it was when the game started. We will see what happens Wednesday. We came out and played well after a tough loss Saturday. That’s what we want to do. We want to jump on teams. We played better today. There were a lot of jitters Saturday. We are come out Wednesday and finish this one before we play the next one.”
The teams are scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Wednesday out at Harrison Central. The originally scheduled game will be played after the conclusion of the started game.
“Honestly, I would have called it and we would not have played, but they said the temperature was supposed to go up every hour. They lied,” first-year Indian Creek (2-0) head coach Amber Scott said. “I did not want there to be any injuries. I figured we are supposed to play them again Wednesday. This game is suspsended. We will finish this one before playing the next game. I did not want to see anyone get hurt.”
The Huskies sent 15 batters to the plate in the first as they erupted for 11 runs to take control of the game.
Mikayla Pelegreen pitched the two innings for the visitors. She struck out three while walking one.
Payton Rath started the game inside the circle for the Redskins, however, she did not make it out of the first inning. Rath struck out one and walked three in her 2/3 innings of work. She was relieved with two outs in the first by Maggie Blackburn, who pitched the final 1 1/3 innings. She did not record a strikeout while walking one.
The girls from Harrison Central outhit the girls from Jefferson County, 11-3, and Harrison Central collected four extra-base hits in the first two innings.
Offensively for Harrison Central, Denali Stull tallied a single, a double and two RBI, Pelegreen produced a single, a double and an RBI and Kara Blackburn recorded a triple and an RBI. Also, Lillian Thomas collected two singles and two RBI, Bailey Smith contributed a double and an RBI and Kamryn Crothers and Jaylin Ward each chipped in with a single and an RBI. Finally, Madalyn Johnson added a single, and Jaiden Pelegreen walked twice and scored one run. Seven players scored at least one run for the Huskies.
“They got in our heads,” Scott said. “We are young. I love the morale. We got back in, and the girls regrouped. It was freezing, but the girls were talking, they were picking each other up and they were telling each other what to do. We can build off that. You have to learn how to lose if you want to be a good team. You have to learn how to deal with adversity.”
Offensively for the Red-and-Gold, Riley Sadler, Tori Gross and Rath all contributed a single.
Indian Creek had multiple baserunners in each of the first two innings, however, the hosts were unable to score a run.
Both teams played Saturday afternoon when the temperature was around 80 degrees. Harrison Central lost a heartbreaker to Edison in extra innings at home, while Indian Creek swept a doubleheader from Union Local at home.
Indian Creek is scheduled to play Buckeye 8 rival Martins Ferry at 5 p.m. today at home.
