Big inning sparks Big Red to big win at Park

WHEELING — The Big Red baseball team turned things around in one inning.

Down 4-3 heading into the top of the fifth, Steubenville concocted a six-run inning to set themselves up for a 10-5 victory Monday over the Wheeling Park Patriots.

With the victory, Big Red moves to 2-0 on the season. Wheeling Park drops to 0-3.

“They’ve been working their tails off since June, and now they get to show it,” Steubenville head coach Justin Banks said. “So now they get to show it in front of all the fans, and they’re having fun. We’re all having fun, and now it’s showing on the field.

The biggest swing of Steubenville’s fifth inning came from the bat of AJ Borsch, who hammered a bases-loaded ground-rule double to left field, one-hopping over the fence and bringing two runs home.

The inning ended on a wild pitch. Borsch came around to score, and after the throw to home was off-the mark as well, another Big Red runner tried to break for the plate, but was thrown out in a bang-bang play.

“Our guys just fought at the plate,” Banks said. “I mean, I think Karson Simmons there had a nine, 10, 11-pitch at-bat. They just wouldn’t go down without a fight and they just kept hitting it hard in play and we made them make the plays, and just put the pressure on them. And that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Cole Bowers and Borsch each had two RBI. Nicholas Lovato and Borsch each doubled, and Mason Chmerloski stole a base for Big Red.

Nolan Blackburn started on the mound for Steubenville, and while the Patriots found some early offense, Steubenville’s own bats more than made up for it. Blackburn ended with six strikeouts, four walks and six hits allowed. Jagger Rawson pitched two innings of one-run ball to close out the game.

“Nolan, he came out and he battled,” Banks said. “He battled early. It took him a minute to get a couple of his pitches over, and once he did, he settled in. Pitch count came up, so we counted on somebody else to come in and do the job, and Jagger did the job.”

Blackburn earned the victory.

Myles Gorby was saddled with the loss for Wheeling Park, allowing eight hits over 4 1/3 innings pitched. Braydon Bartsch went the rest of the way for Park, striking out a pair over 2 2/3 innings.

Brody Groome doubled and drove in two runs for Park, while Jaxon Updegraff also doubled as part of a two-hit day.

Bartsch, leadoff man Kolten Whitmire and centerfielder Rylan Moore also tallied RBI for the Patriots.

“Hats off to Steubenville,” Wheeling Park head coach Chad Stout said. “They played a good baseball game. And us, we need to get better. That’s what it comes down to. We just got to continue to show up. Show up and be ready to play. I don’t know if that was the case today. So, it is what it is. And the one good thing about baseball is we play tomorrow. So, from here, we’ve got to get better.”

Wheeling Park committed four errors on Monday and Steubenville committed three. Steubenville had 11 hits to Park’s seven.
