Wildcats pull away from Blue Dons for victory
WEIRTON — The Edison boys’ basketball team got going offensively in the second quarter against Madonna, and the Wildcats ended up pulling away from the youthful Blue Dons.
The game was tied at the end of the first, however, Edison outscored Madonna by 21 points the rest of the way on its way to a 75-54 victory Wednesday night inside the Dube Dome.
“It was the typical problems with having a young team,” Madonna (2-16) head coach George Vargo said. “We seem to play a good 28 minutes, and then four not go good minutes. We have a lot of youth, and we get rattled. We played a senior heavy team. They have length. I am proud of our guys. They play hard. They do play very hard.
“We are young, and we have 15-year-olds playing four quarters against 18-year-olds but no excuses. We make mistakes. When we make mistakes, it leads to turnovers and points on the other end like it did tonight.
“We had some good looks, but we couldn’t finish them. We had four or five 3s that we just didn’t make. Jake and Reno are our two big scorers. They are our offensive connection. we just need to get three or four other guys to pick up the slack. Luke Wingett had nine points tonight. We hit a couple of 3s, and that spurred us a little bit.
“We just make mistakes at the wrong time. When we make mistakes, it leads to points on the other end.
“We get back at it at practice. These kids come to practice every day. They are working hard. Rebounding is a problem for us, but that is something we are working on. With this group, this is the most fun I have had in a long time. We will rebound. The kids are great. We are having a great time. We are getting better. From Day 1 until now, the improvement has been tremendous. As a coach, all you can ask is for them to improve and get better. You have to understand basketball, and we are trying to get there. We have made a big improvement from the beginning of the season.”
The game was deadlocked at 12 at the end of the first, but the visitors from Jefferson County outscored the hosts, 19-10, in the quarter to build a 31-22 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
The visitors outscored the Blue Dons, 23-17, in the third to extend their advantage out to 54-39 entering the fourth.
The Wildcats led by as many as 23 points in the fourth.
Four players reached double digits in points for Edison (6-10). Individually, Timmy DeGarmo tallied a game-high 19 points, Kyle Long collected 16 and Isaiah Filburn finished with 13. Finally, Bryce Rogers recorded 12.
Jake Druga delivered a team-high 16 points to lead the way for the boys in white and Reno Fuscardo contributed 15 to go along with Wingett’s nine.
The win enabled the Wildcats to sweep the season series from the Blue Dons. Edison defeated Madonna, 72-47, Jan. 13 at home.
“One thing we did different was we played a 1-3-1 out there, but tonight we played a 2-3 for most of the game,” Vargo said. “Playing the 2-3 helps us with rebounding. Playing the 1-3-1, we get beat on the block. We played the 2-3.
“We just made some young mistakes, and they hurt us. A six-point game turned into a 10-point game in an eye blink.”
Edison is scheduled to play Harrison Central Friday night on the road. The game will be broadcasted by WTOV 9.
Madonna is slated to play Tuesday in an OVAC consolation pool game against an opponent to be announced. Today is the cutoff date for teams to qualify for the annual conference tournament.
